(update w/ pics) My new fiberglass subwoofer project. . .
I started on my new little subwoofer project today. I'm building a small sealed fiberglass enclosure between the rear seatbacks, where the VTEC models have the 6x9. The enclosure is designed for a JL Audio 6W0 subwoofer (a new, 6.5 inch subwoofer). The speaker will be facing into the cabin. It's not gonna be the hardest hitting setup, but having a small sub in the passenger compartment should provide just the low-end reinforcement rock listeners crave. More than anything, I'm just doing this project for installation experience, trying to prove I have some creativity and talent. I'll post pics as soon as I can find my damn digital camera and some batteries to go in it!
I like this idea. I think im gonna get rid of my heavy box in the rear and it would be nice to still have a little bass in the music. I think the sub would do pretty well too since its in the cabin.

This thing should be really light, and the 6W0 only needs about 80 watts RMS power, so you can use a small amp as well. I'm probably going to be using an older Zapco unit that does 80x1 RMS power. There is a thread in the Audio forum with pics of a similar setup in a 5th gen.
I had a friend do something similar to that. he installed 2 6W0's. Both facing into the cabin. It sounded very good, and the enclosure looks stock, other than it now has 2 grills on it.

Here are some pics in the initial stages. I havent decided what to do about refinishing everything yet. . .probably going to use vinyl or smooth the entire thing out (get rid of grain in plastic) and repaint it. Any other suggestions? The total volume was about 8 pts, which translates to about .12 cubic feet (after factoring in driver displacement). The minimum recomended enclosure size is .15, so I may add a little polyfill to the inside of the enclosure. There is going to be a nice stealthy grill to cover up the speker.
Backside of enclosure, 3 layers thick of 20 oz. Knytex weave:
Front of enclosure (side facing into car). There is still a good amount of smoothing/shaping that I need to do to get all the contours right. . .but it's getting there:
i have a 92 si and i would like to purchase this box from u if possible. ive been wanting a jl audio 6 inside the cab in the back for a while and couldnt think of a setup to support it. just keep us updated man and keep up the good work

I really havent decided what I'm gonna do with it once it's finished. I know I'm going to go ahead and buy the speaker and amp for it, because I want to try it out. If I'm satisfied, I'll probably sell my current subwoofer setup. If I can't bring myself to give up my IDQ10, I'll sell the whole 6.5 package. I probably wouldnt charge too much for the labor, since I'm really just doing it as an "experiment". The experience is more valuable to me than payment for the work. . .gets me one step closer to getting a JOB doing this.
After doing the Bondo dance (apply, sand, apply, sand, etc) and painting with a high-build primer, the enclosure is almost ready for vinyl. There is still a little finish sanding to be done first though. Now I just gotta run some wires into it and order the grill.
well if you do decide to keep it would u consider building me the same inclosure? i think that would be great because im about to get my interior redone and this would set it off and just look soooo clean.

Sure. Do you have the VTEC model with the grill opening in it? This one is built off of the VTEC console, which was nice because I didn't have to cut a new opening. I'd have to do it before mid August though, since I wont have time once school starts again.
grrr i would want one too... if it goes where i thinks it goes... it would look sweet cause i am thinking of doin a sound setup but i dont' wanna go like insane... so i might hit u up when u finish if u can make me one

into the cabin im sure
are you going to grill the speaker off? I have alot of people riding in the backseats usually.. some type of custom girll would be awesome, maybe one that says Prelude or something.. Vtec/Si..h22a..h23.. Honda...
are you going to make them for anybody who wants them? if so how much is one of thsoe things gonna cost? looks like it will be sweet as hell to me and i want one bad, i've been thinking of adding a little bass to my prelude again and this would be a badass way to do it!

yeah, the VTEC and Si have the same upper plastic piece (except the VTEC has a gril for the 6x9). I have an S model actually, and mine is identical to the Si ones. I think it is also the same for all years (92-96). I bought and modified a VTEC piece because it already had an opening in the front of it, which just saved me some time because I didnt have to hack a new hole.
yes, I have seen them. I cannot believe anybody actualy bid on them though. . .its little more than a PVC pipe coupler, some gutter screen, and an emblem. You could probably do it yourself for like $10. I doubt it even makes an appreciable difference in SPL level either. Mine is now for sale, but the way. . .see my sig.
well if you were to start making these for people could you do something like the indiglo emblems like that guy did. i think with a sub in that part of the console with an indiglo h emblem would look sweet on my car
