My mugen bored throttle body...

So like a year ago i had my stock TB sent out to King Motorsports (Mugen) to be bored out...I got it back and yeah I was def happy with it..noticable gains in the ass dyno. Faster throttle response..and more oomf. Anyway a freind of mine just got a new job at a hightech machine shop that builds compressors and motors for industial purposes. Anyway they have some nice honing and boring equipment so I asked him to shave another 2mm off my TB

long story short he did a fine job..not tapered either..and the walls of my Tb are paper thin.

Ass dyno result..got in the car no diff in low rpms but when I took it on the highway..all I got's to say is mmmmm..mmm.mmmmmh

sorry..just needed to share

I couldn't really "hook anyone up" he's not supposed to be doing this kind of **** on company equipment.

Happened that the boss asked him to put in some OT on a Sun when no one would be around so we took advantage and I went there all day and hung out with him. Drinking beers and watching football while he worked. Then I was like

"dude if I can take off my Tb will you bore it for me?"

"Yeah if you can take it off in 20 mins"

and that's how it happened

by the way I have a stock Tb that I bought when mine was first sent out. Has the TB position sensor and everything...it's used but if you want to have no down time. I can sell this one to be bored out. I paid $50 bucks at the junkyard..make me an offer

Machine Boy,

How does the bored throttle body help increase power? Is it because of more air? Apologies for my ignorance, still new to the performance scene.

What about these Spoon ones I see on the web? Can they be direct replacements for our stock ones?

Lude on!

I'll keep it simple..you got this big fat intake and your cramming all this dense cold air into your engine...then bam you hit a bottleneck. The stock TB has thick walls and a smaller inlet.

The TB is the last thing between your runners and the combustion chamber. By opening up the bottle neck you flow more air.. hence better cumbustion..hence more power. Now this is really basic...theres more to flow patterns and stuff but you get the idea. also you improve your throttle response, which means you rev higher faster..keeping you in the power band

The spoons are nice..and expensive..but they have a larger opening than you could ever bore out of a stock unit (70m)..hence more power. BUT TOO big has been known to cause a loss of power .so bigger is not all better

That's all well and good, but the engine can only flow so much air. I doubt that you are getting a bunch more air into the combustion chamber. What you feel is the increased throttle response, which is the usual feeling with an overbored TB. Also, if your buddy increased the TB 2mm more, then what did you do to increase the size of the throttle plate by 2mm? Not trying to bust your bubble or anything, because that was same feeling I got after doing my first Tb many years ago. And I don't want people thinking that they can gain some massive power with this mod. Overbored TB should be one of the last things. You will really notice a difference after having some head work done. And just a note, King Motorsports is not Mugen. They are just the official U.S. importer for Mugen.

Dr.:
I agree, this is why i also am having my friend who owns a shop port-match the intake and exhuast manifold as soon as i put the header and tb on.

At least that way im free-flowing and matching.

I'm kinda prepping the car for FI, get it nice and open. Last thing i will do is slight headwork and a build the bottom end.

(For now, getting that air flowing good)

I figure im going in the right direction? Nobody (mechanics) have said me doing the tb/portmatching i/h/e is the wrong way to start.

Edit: ya, i didnt expect HUGE gains from just the TB, but puting the tb and the header on at the same time, i expect for the butt dyno to show some good improvement

I know I didn't gain a solid 20 hp from the mod..But hey the way I look at it the more air the better. I'll probably never run my car on a dyno (non in my immediate area). So the butt dyno is all that matters to me. I already have your standard list of bolt ons I/H/E/P..Aem rail, and FPR, for me the TB was the next affordable mod before cams and then serious internal work...(shaved head?).

I might consider getting an MSD 6al but that's about it.
