my brake pad dissappeared...

so, last week, my brake pads had about half the stuff left on them. anyways, the past two nights its been scraping like crazy, yet when i mash the brakes, nothing, its quiet. when i parked here at school today i looked at my front, driver side brake pad. ALL THE WAY WORN DOWN!!! and the passenger side is about halfway worn. what could be the problem? the passenger side has worn faster than the driver side in the past. would this be a "defect" or could the pad stuff just fell off somewhere during my hard braking? P.S. - they are autozone and i am taking the bishes back tonight after school....

Thanks,
JS

yea, same here, something on your caliper must have siezed up, that could account for the uneven wear. it happened to me before.

First thing lift the rear of the car (or get it lifted on a hoist) and check if the rear wheels turn freely. If one of them doesn't turn as freely as the other then you'll know that the caliper is stuck.

Them you might need to get a new caliper, that's what I did. Or rebuild your current one but a rebuilt caliper isn't that much more expensive than a rebuild kit and it's much less work. And you'll need a new set of pads if they really worn down.

Also it might be just the hand brake cable that's stuck.

it was the FRONT, i thought i clarified that, if not, then i am and always will be a DA. Anyways, the guy at autozone told me to pull the rods out and clean and regrease them. needless to say, i had to work to get them out and once i cleaned and regreased them, they slid in and out like i thought they should. now i will smell burning brakes for the next two days....atleast they replaced them under warranty

Yes sorry, you did say it was the front ones, I just forgot cause I don't re-read the whole thread to reply When you say the rods you mean the pistons right? It's nice that you've been able to fix them without having to get new calipers!

ill explain what i mean by rods, and this is what i udnerstood it as from the guy at autozone. the bracket that holds the pads (not the caliper) has these rods/pins on the back which holds the bolts for the caliper. the rods/pins that the bolts screw into is what i cleaned and regreased. my car actually rolls back now!!! before if it was just a slight incline then it would not roll back, now it does. woot woot!!!
