Minor and weird AC problem - Honda Prelude Forum

ok here is the deal, my AC works pefectly find, its cold as hell. ( kinda need that in FL) The only thing thats wrong with it, is sometimes there is this weird smell then comes out the vents, for about 2 or 3 mins, then it gets back to normal. It doesnt happen all the time, maybe once or twice every 2 or 3 days. It works really well, but just that smell takes over for like 2 mins, then it goes away. and everything is kool. I have no clue what it is, i just changed the evaporator and the dryer. And the other thing is, outta nowhere, it would stop blowin cold air, so i have to turn it on and off a few times b4 it comes back to mad cold. For that problem, my guess is the clutch on the compressor is givin up, but i mnot sure, but i really need help for that smell, it doesnt smell that bad, its just unconfortable for for the time that its there, then it leaves with it gets back to normal ! help if u can. thanks.

my initial guess for the smell is that there is mold in there. it happens to everybody. even though you replaced the evaporator and dryer, there still could be mold that grew from condensation over time. as you use your AC, and turn it off at the same time you turn off your engine, then all that cold air turns into condensation. and over time, that water begins to mold and thus that's why your smell is there. i think every car out there has this problem. most people just attach a air freshner by the vent so you don't smell it. unless you wanna change your whole piping....just turn off your AC a couple minutes b4 you turn off your car.

if your ac turns on and off....my guess it's an electrical problem or like you said, the compressor itself. check the wiring and connections behind the dash if you can. maybe you'll find something there.

Easy fix to any A/C problems. Just take it out!

^^ yea if you live in WA it doesn't seem to be a problem. Try any midwestern or southern state.

i notice a wierd musky smell afterwards...if i've been smoking in my car with the a/c on...later on after repeated smokin with a/c on...it will start to smell a little funky,

i've since then...never smoked with the a/c on...and no more smell!
