Metal Scrape while applying brakes.

Hello,
For about the past week I've been hearing a metal scraping noise from my front driver side wheel when I apply the brakes. Only thing I can think of if would be would be the caliper digging into the rotor like I need a new brake pad. I'd been hoping that it would just go away like maybe something was in the brake pad, but the sound of metal on metal is really aggrivating. You think I could just need a new brake pad? Can I pick them up at like AutoZone?

Thanks in advance,
Jim

It sounds like your pads are gone or are getting there. You may need rotors also depending on how far the pads are worn. If the rotors aren't too bad I would still recomend having the rotors resurfaced. You could pick them up at autozone but you should go to NAPA and get Ceramix Brake pads (ceramics are OE on our cars) They are a little pricey but well worth it. And if you need rotors pickup the NAPA united line, they meet or exceed all OE specs, including vane direction, count, and thickness. If you go to autozone you will get cheap crap.

*sometimes* i hear a metal grinding sound when i brake, but my rotors, pads, and calipers are all a little more than a year old (Legend caliper / vtec rotor swap). the pads are fine and i can't find any signs of scraping on any braking component.

it did it with my stock Si brakes too... weird

It could be incompatiblility (sp?) between pads and rotors (ex: metallic pads on rotors meant for ceramic). It could be rotors are slightly grooved causing the pads to slide around a little in the calipers. Or u need to grease the slides on the calipers to keep the pads moving freely or you calipers may be binding. One thing to remember your brakes are always squeeking just not always at a frequency you can hear.

haha, with Hawk HP+ pads they always squeal at a frequency you can hear, lol

my rotors are pretty worn down from the pads though. these pads eat up rotors.

i'll check the edges of the pad though to make sure they haven't been rubbing against the center of the rotors.

oh, btw, the spacer/backing of one of my rear HP pads started sliding off the pad and rubbed against the center of the rotor making a pretty bad metal scraping sound and a nice groove... see if the spacers on your pads arent out of place

I just bought the napa ceramic pads. I'll install them and see if that fixes my problem. They should be pretty easy to install, ya?

on the question of brakes I notice when I brake hard they are fine, they rarely squeak .. i replaced pads and rotors last october.. I noticed a while after (couple - 3 months .. maybe 6months shrug) When I'm going very slow coming up to a stop theres a ... scrape scrape scrape scrape as i'm stopping .. this happens on all tires but only when the brakes are applied very lightly ..

I had my mechanic inspect and as well T&T honda and everything looks great, pads have lots left on them but still this sound comes out.. i've learnt to deal with it but i hate having pedestrians look at me like my car is f*'d up. :|

brake pads are bout the easiest thing to install...

just remove the wheel, loosen the bottom bolt on the caliper and remove the top one (the bolts that are connected to a rod that moves in and out of a cylinder on the bracket). Then just swing the caliper forward, remove the old pads, push in the piston in the caliper with a c-clamp, install the new pads, and put everything back together.

my spacer thing is too close to the inside of the rotor, it used to squeek all the time, not anymore though - its probably worn down too much

Yeah ... I think its time to get a helms ..

The c-clamp part is the part that makes the least sense to me.
