metal on metal scraping NOISE?!?!

hey guys, it seems i have a major problem(just doesn't seem like its gonna be a minor problem).

i have a manual transmission 92 Si with little over 100k miles on it... purchased it used in february and havent really had any problems until recently..... ARGH!

for the last month or so, iv'e had a screeching sound coming from what seems to be the front of my car, when i put my head outside it sounds like its comin from the front wheels MAYBE

now... for example..... whenever i switch gears and lets say im in 4th at about 55-60 miles on the odometer, i hear this terrible screeching sound AS SOON as i let off the gas all the way... it doesnt matter if my clutch is in or not.... all that matters is if i tap on the gas... hold it.... and release.... at about 30 miles and over it will produce this screeching sound... as soon as i push on the gas again the noise dissapears until ONCE AGAIN i release the gas fully

its been getting worse.....

i thought it may have been my brakes.... i went and got them checked.... brake pads were almost completely gone and needed to be replaced.. plus an alignment on my wheels... which i got all done with... but still the problem exists!

ANOTHER ODD THING IS: i tried to show one of my friends the problem today by letting him drive with me and listen...... BUT.... the noise never came... reason? only reason i can say is was... unlike other days that i notice the problem.... it was pretty cold today... and it seems the problem does happen when its hot.... or sunny... or maybe im just going insane?

alright guys i hope someones had this same problem(keyword: had) and can clue me in ..... NO IDEA! alright guys thanks a lot for any help bye

hhhmmm....from what you described....i've had the same problem before and it turned out to be my distributor....but that was coming from the engine bay....but its a metal to metal grinding sound.....how long have you been driving the car now with that sound?....i would take it to a honda specialist if i were you....

is it a tap tap tap, ratatatatatattat kinda sound like metal hitting metal consistently? if it is and u can *also* hear it on idle then u need a valve adjustment.

*update*

BIG UPDATE GUYS:

i went for a testdrive today totally focusing on pinpointing the noise

to my asonishment, the noise does come in nuetral too, but only at ONE CERTAIN RPM... ALWAYS

it also comes while in drive, SO I COMPILED A LIST BELOW; it shows what gear i'm in at what rpm at what speed... when the noise occurs.

GEAR RPM SPEEDOMETER NOISE
NUETRAL 3000 N/A YES
1st N/A N/A N/A
2nd 3-3.2 30-32 m/h YES
3rd 4-4.2 40-42 m/h YES
4th 5 50-52 m/h YES

NOTE: the noise occurs only when pedal was on gas and then released, as the speed decreased and it hit the range in the LIST above is when the noise started... so once again.. noise occurs when speed decreases after releasing gas

i didn't check for noise in 1st since i just go to about 3 rpms and switch gears immediately(but slowly )

as far as manuvering, that didn't pinpoint which wheel(if its with the wheels) it was coming from, but i distincly heard the noise better from the driver side. moving left or right didnt seem to have anything to do with the wheel.... because only about once out of 10 times turning to the left did i hear the noise and thats just prolly from me being in the range of one of those factors in the LIST ABOVE

alright guys, thats all i got for now.... any help is greatly appreciated!

check your exhuast......heat shield or small leak in the exhaust can trick the ears. I had an exhaust leak...a small tiny one to start off with. heard a similar metal type sound. found out it was my exhaust beginning to crack. the check was really small when i had it check.....just a thought for you to do....

Take off the distributor cap.. see all the red dust? That's your distributor bearing destroying itself, and that's the screeching you hear. New distributor time!

I would first check that the lug nuts are on tight. A less wheel could possibly make that sound (although not likely).

Strong possiblity is it is the header flange. Do you have an aftermarket header? The flange cracking is a common problem that occures and makes a sound like you describe. If so, search for a thread of mine from a while back. Also, in the FAQ tehre is a thread titled "header, DC" or something like that check that out two...
