Melted Jumper Cables!!! What The Hell?

I own a 92' Prelude Si, of course, and I tried to to jump my brothers car. As soon as we got the cable connected from my battery to his, his alternator belt and fan jumped a few times, after it stopped we tried to start his truck and it clicked by didn't turn over, then we noticed smoke and saw that the cables melted to my bumper. The whole cable melted and wires stuck out. Has anone ever experienced this before, or do you know what happened?

It sounds like you put one set of cables on backwards.

no i dont think its that, we connected the negatives to the negatives and positives to positives, but it was the negative cable that melted.

What do you mean by: "his alternator belt and fan jumped a few times"??

Could be:
- Cheap or old cables
- Jumper cable shorted out somewhere. Possibly on the frame, between the 2 cables, or on a bumper (if his truck has a metal bumper)
