Major Oil Leak

Hey Guys,
I left the house today and my dad noticed major oil on the driveway. We popped the hood and saw oil everywhere on the back of the engine. It spayed all over the Fuel injection system and the brake fluid container. It even sprayed onto the hood. There is oil everwhere below the engine and it is dripping on to the ground. The oil level isnt even regeristing on the dipstick. There was no oil on the other side of the driveway where i way yestrerday, so it must have blown when I started the car today.
I was about 0 out last night, so not sure if that could be related, but I checked, and coolent levels are fine.
I did some searching and people had similar problem when O-ring went bad? or balencer shaft seal?
Any thoughts or help is really apprieated.
Its a 93 VTEC with ~140,000 btw.

Thanks, Nick

Oil cooler O-Ring. The oil Cooler is what the oil filter screws down on, on the H22 VTEC engines. Inspect that area for the origin of the oil leak. Also when is the last time you changed the oil filter? The gasket from the old oil filter could have stuck to the block. The new gasket wouldn't be able to seal.

If it is the balancer shaft seal the only place you would have noticible oil leakage is from the lower timing belt cover. My guess is the oil cooler o-ring like xander mentioned. It could also be your head gasket.

had a similar problem on my 93 vtec soon after i bought it.

put oil in the car and start it up and get under it to see exactly where it's coming out of.

oil cooler gasket doesn't dump so much oil out... it's more of a steady small leak, however the balancer shaft seal really dumps out the oil at a very high rate.

you'll see it coming out of the side plastic cover on the block. (driver's side)

might as well replace your auto tensioner while you are replacing the balancer shaft seal (if it is that in the first place)

I had to have the balance shaft seal replaced on m 93 VTEC at 135k after the timing belt and water pump was replaced. Now I have the oil cooler o-ring leaking also. The balancer shaft seal was a huge leak where the oil cooler is a small steady leak. Let us know what you find. I have 139k on my VTEC. Seems like a age thing with these cars.

if the leak is between the oil filter itself and the piece it screws onto (oil cooler), then it's the oil filter gasket.

if the leak is between the oil cooler and the block, then it's the O-ring for the oil cooler.

you can get the part from the dealer for $2-3. very easy and simple install. it's just hard working with such little space down there.

I had the same exact problem. Oil sprayed all over the hood and got quite a bit on the injectors as well as lost a amssive amount on the floor =[. Was the balancer shaft seal.

i just did this this morning.. i assume it is about to be a pretty common problem for everyone on these forums due to the unnaturally cold weather.. it causes the oring to crack and mine actually broke into 2 pieces..

i shoulda taken pictures but it was so easy i didnt think it was necessary..

anyways, first drain the oil, then remove the oil filter...

use a 30mm deepsocket and remove the bolt in the center of the oil cooler. crack the cooler loose from the block,.. remove the oring, mine was stuck to the block but if it isnt there then check in the groove in the oil cooler.. go get a new ring, oil it up, slide it into the groove on the oil cooler, then put the 30mm bolt back on hand tight then 1/4 turn or so more.. then continue as if giving an oil change.. then when you are done, or atleast this is what i did, i used an entire can of brakleen and spraayed off the back of the block.. use an entire can, just fllod the block with it.. it will remove all the old oil and then the brakleen just eveaporates within a few seconds.. then i put uv dye in the oil and put the car on a lift and ran it for like 20 min, reving it up occasionally and using a uv light and uv glasses to look for any new leaks.. there were none so im happy.. pm or post any questions, i just did it this morning so its still fresh..

All its held on by is 1 bolt which is hidden by the oil filter itself, or did I just mis-read that? I'm not sure I totally understand.

also, a 30mm? I dont even have tools that big.. yikes. My biggest metric, is a 19mm.. uhh hmm I dunno what to do.

30mm deep socket btw, or i think you need a deep, didnt try it with a shallow
