Main Relay Bad -- Where is it Located?

Hi Folks,

Our 93 Prelude Si quit running a year ago and the dealer replaced the "main relay (RZ-0139)." After that, the car was fine until the other day when it quit running again.

Can anybody tell me where that relay is located, and what it does? I'm thinking of just replacing it myself.

Thanks so much,

Fred

I actually just took my out today, if you take off the panel under the steering coloum it is a red relay about 1 inch wide and about 3 inches long, it has one conection with four wires going to it and is held on by one 10 ml bolt.

Guys, thank you so much! I also saw the earlier post on the same subject (oooooops!). But since I'm a newbie, I am forgiven for missing that, right? ;^D

It sounds like the "main relay bad, won't start" is a common problem...si? Then why is it the dealer would not change it and just said "sorry, we can't find the problem." (Or does that question answer itself?)

Best regards,

Fred

yes, very common. As I said in the other thread, it may just be easier to slide the relay out of the housing rather than tearing apart your panels. I found it easy at least.

The main relay sends power to the ecm and fuel injectors as well as the fuel pump, which is supposed to turn on for 2 seconds when you first put your ignition in the "on" position (or whatever it is). One way to tell is to listen for a "click" coming from under your dash about a second after you turn your key - don't start the car, just put the key in the position right before you start it, when all the lights come on - then listen for a click.

Don't know why your dealer hates you newb

Mine came out easy... It just took some coaxing to get positioned under the dash. Mine went bad a couple weeks ago, just stopped starting one day, and would start for 3 days, tested battery etc... but found the main relay was dead.

My mechanic just gave me a main relay he had ying around from an Accord... works fine
