Lower Ball joint/castle nut (how do you put it back on?)

I was buttoning everything back up when I tried to put the castle nut on the lower control arm's ball joint bolt. The damn bolt keeps on turning with the nut! How do I keep it in place so I can tighten up the castle nut?! Anyone?

If you don't know which bolt I'm talking about, it's this one:

TIA!

Push the lower arm against the lower ball joint as hard as you can while you put the castle nut on, I found it helps... also make sure the threads on both the lower ball joint and the castle nut are alright, maybe using a new castle nut would help too

Good luck

Thanx, I'll have to try that. I broke a few small screwdrivers trying to hold the bolt still by sticking them in the pin hole.

Why did you remove it in the first place? Changing CVs?

I do alot of suspension work and the way to put the castle nut back on is you have to put some kind of pressure on the bolt to keep it from spinning try putting the nut on as much as you can before the stud starts spinning then some kind of pry bar and stick it between the control arm and the sub frame and put pressure down on the control arm then tighten it. MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT HIT THE STUD THREADS WHITH THE BAR WHEN YOU PUT PRESSURE ON THE CONTROL ARM YOU WILL DAMAGE THE THREADS!! good luck bro

Thats odd, I've never had a problem with that bolt turning. And I've taken it off many times. It always stays put.

what did you use to get the lower control arm seperated from the ball joint? I was considering using a pitman arm puller, but i really have no idea how to use it. Any help? thanks

I don't think the arm puller would work. Instead, try using this tool:

a pittman arm puller works well but I don't have one that's big enough for the lower ball joint, but for the other ones it works perfectly and it's only costed me 35$CDN instead of 1504CDN for the Honda one...

That actually worked for you? My ball joints were so stuck that the tool bent the threads on the ball joint instead of pop it out. But I got the cheap imitation one, not the Honda one, maybe thats why?

You're suppose to put a nut on the lower ball joint before you use a puller on it...

Whein I put mine back together I had the same problem. I cleaned as much grease off the ball joint 'taper' as I could, got the threads started and put the floor jack underneath the arm to push it up slightly.. It took a little back n' forth action but it eventually went on.

A pitman arm puller is ideal for our ball joints BTW, it works awesome. (I'm off to go get one now for my spring install!)

anybody know a company that makes one big enough for the lower ball joint? I have a KD one but it's a bit too small... if I can't find one big enough I might just get another KD and grind it a bit to make it larger...
