loud screeching noise coming from under my hood

this loud screeching noise comes from under the hood of my car usually when i start my car in the morning and whenever I dont start my car for a long period of time, like 4 or 5 hours. I heard it was the belts being loosed or something but im not sure wat it is.
If it is the belts how do i go about tightnen it.
thatnks fro your help.

I have the same prob when I shift from 2nd to 3rd, and I'm really getting on the gas. If I don't gun it, then there's no sound. Any ideas?

Prelude SI Man,
Definitely sounds like loose belts, However before you go about tightening anything up, try investigating which belts are screeching ... a simple test is (Engine off) pushing the belts with your finger to see how much slack there is...obviously there shouldnt be much....secondly, when did you last change them...general age/wear and tear causes the noise on all make of cars. as well as moisture in the morning on slack belts.
The reason it stops is because when it warms up it expands...
Slick96...absolutely no idea why it screeches between 2nd and 3rd...open a new post for it, im sure someone out there will know.

I didn't even think of checking this belt ... the other ones I check regularly. Thanks for the idea. I fixed my cracked header hanger, I'll fix this belt soon ... now, if only I could fix the rattle from the supports underneath my c/f hood...
