Long trip in Si or S

Ive been reading up in some older posts about the difference in gear ratio's between the S and Si. Im planning a long trip from Minneapolis to Phoenix and I want to take the Si which has lower miles, new timing belt and in tip top shape. However I worried about driving such a long trip which Ill probably be cruising around 80 (4000RPM) for long hours at a time. I know that in my S when cruising at 80 i am still in the 3000 range. I feel that I will be subjecting my H23 to undue stress at 4000 RPM! Is this necessarily true,,,,,,or am I just worrying too much?

I've wondered the same thing, except I would probably be going between 90 - 110

I don’t know much, but it seems like if you were running lower RPMs you would get better gas mileage too. But I doubt you really would. I would like to do some test and see. You would have to use the same engine, just change out the tranny.

I have driven my SI all over and have never had problems. All in you I think you are worrying too much and I am just rambling.

Bah - worrying too much. I drive 10-12 hours to Canada several times a year in my SI going 80. 4000rpms isn't bad for a Honda. I still get decent fuel milage (26+) and it zips right along as happy as can be and I don't burn any oil Plus it sounds like your SI is in better shape... and what about cruise control? DOes your S have that?

Yeah,,,your probably right,,,,,its a damn Honda,,,,and yes I do worry to much! Sometimes I worry about the fact that I worry too much!!! Besides I had an 88 accord that I ran to shiot, hi revs, racing down this back country road for like an hour to my gf house. I think I did that for almost 2 years and never had a problem. I swear one time the speedometer was topped out at 130,,,,,but I know that couldnt have been accurate!

Oh yeah,,,,an my S does have cruise control.

Its perfectly fine for the car to do that...I drive up to mammoth (300 miles away) about 5 times a year and never had a problem...if you keep the rpms just below 4k youll get much better gas mileage. I got 29-31mpg when I did that. I havnt done anything longer than 2 hours on the vtec engine so we shall see.

your car is nore efficient when the motor is at a higher RPM. It sounds wierd but it is the truth.

i noticed that the gear ratios for the S and the Vtec are pretty close. Why did honda decide to drastically alter the gear ratios for the Si? Were they looking for a model with better low end torque?

No problem at all. I did a whole trip to Virginia in back with my H22 riding at 4400rpm or so the whole way....26hrs driving there, and 26 back....no problems at all.

Honda does recommend 1 step colder plugs for long trips just so you know.

Shoot thats not a very long trip. I drove my lude from Oklahoma to Florida Non stop. It was about 20 hours straight, only stops were for gas and pee pee. Car ran like a champ! I was cruzing there at about 100 then i got pulled over and got a speeding ticket then i slowed it down to 85 and drove all the way there, 1 week later I drove the same thing back. No problems at all! I cant wait to make the all night trip again. Fun Fun. No wories you got a prelude!
