Koni Install Question

I'm thinking about purchasing some Koni shocks (Neuspeed Koni's to be exact) and was just researching the details. Apparently, there's a collar you have to transfer from the stock front shocks to the Koni's. I'm not sure if I even have my stock shocks anywhere.

Here's the key: I'm not sure if this just pertains to 5th shocks or to 4th gen also.

Here's the collar I'm talking about: Koni Yellow owners...please read...

So, if any 4th genner's have Koni's, did you guys have to transfer this collar over? Or do we even have these collars on our stock shocks. I haven't seen a stock shock in like 4+ years, so I don't quite remember if we even have this.

If we do need it, anyone want to sell me a couple?? haha

You cannot transfer any of the upper mounting hardware from stock to the Konis. The stock shock shafts are 10mm. The Konis are 12mm. They won't fit.

Each Koni shock should have the following:

12mm ID sleeve
2 M12x1.25 jam nuts
1 "thin" 12mm ID fender washer
1 "thick" 12mm ID fender washer
1 12mm ID washer, with a lip around the edge. The washer is a bit dished, for lack of a better term.

You replace the stock metal sleeves with the Konis. Same goes for the washers. The dished washer goes on TOP of the spring cap, with the lip facing upward, so that the washer is like so: \___________/

Make sense?

Okay, that info will help with my install. But, my question was actually about this black collar on the bottoms of the front shocks:

Apparently, you're supposed to transfer that black collar from the stock shocks to the koni's to help align/center the shocks in the fork and it also helps prevent the shock body from sliding through the fork.

I was wondering if this is just a 5th gen thing or does this to apply to 4th gen shocks also.

Also, are these absolutely needed?

Sorry, I was being an idiot. I was thinking of the sleeve in the upper spring cap. DOH! I was wondering what you meant by that thread. I didn't take the time to read all the way through it.

It's a good idea to transfer those over, but you don't necessarily have to. David ran his revalved Konis for 2 or 3 years without them, and that was on a race car with high spring and damping rates.

Hmm, I'll keep that in mind when I go hunting for my stock shocks.

Do you know if the 4th gen shocks have those collars also? The people that mentioned in the thread all had 5th gens.

I don't honestly know.

Keep in mind that SOME Koni shocks had a little tab welded to the shock body that took the place of that collar. I don't think I've seen any of the Neuspeed Konis like that, but I have seen some of the "regular" Konis with that piece welded on.

Also, don't the 4Gen shocks have a brake bracket welded to the shock body?

There's a little sleeve/bracket on the bottom of the front stock shocks that you can just hammer down & off of the shock body. I didn't need to transfer those to my Koni's when I did my suspension.

I did the very same install of Neuspeed Koni's (with ground controll coilovers\adjustable spring perch) on my fourth gen last year. I love this setup though I wish ground controll gave me harder springs (eibach).

Yes, on a 4th gen you do have to transfer the lower shock mounting collar from the original shocks to the Koni's and the little tab (on the bottom of the right shock collar in your photo) has to be directly over the the clamp screw relief in the shock. If you don't put this collar on your new shocks they will just flop around inside the clamp.

There was a review and installation walkthrough on the NTPOG website but they are currently moving to another server. This was a great writeup with lots of useful info. When the site is up again you might want to check it out.

On a side note........what are you running for suspension if you dont have the stockers. What you are running probibly has this collar if its not welded to the shock. In wich case go to the junk yard.
