Knock sensor, is it really needed?

Do I REALLY need the knock sensor? Can I run without it, and will it throw a code if it's not connected? TIA!

Your car will be in "Limp home" mode without it.
In other words... Yes, you need a knock sensor.

Personally, I wouldnt want a car with a 10+ CR that didnt have a knock sensor.... But im not very fond of replacing pistons.

When I had my knock sensor busted I noticed a big difference in performance, I would replace it.

Oh great. So I have to get a new one?

I tried to remove the knock sensor from my H22a4 and pulled out the plastic part, with the bolt part still in the block. It looks like there are two little contacts that ripped off.

Anyone have a spare knock sensor for an H22a4? And plus the connector coming out from the wire harness also?

You wont go into limp mode with it not working. I wouldn't want to drive around too long with out it though because I think its point is to retard the timing if you car does ever start to knock.

That's what I was thinking too...I have an A/F ratio gauge, EGT gauge, and a V-AFC to help tune. Mods are a stock motor, with CAI and exhaust.

I don't really think I'll run into detonation with these mods. Also, I run premium exclusively, so that's not a problem either, I hope?

So will it go into Limp mode or not w/o the knock sensor hooked up?

Mine didn't go into limp mode, and I drove mine around for about a week without a knock sensor in there. I have an H23, I dunno if the H22 would go into limp mode or not. The only main annoyance of not having the sensor was that damn CEL.

I still cant believe you drove all the way to LFW without the knock sensor. I would have been just sitting there waiting for my engine to blow. I mean geez, it is a 3.5 hour drive. If nothign else it showed how dedicated you were to get to the meet.

I don't think the knock sensor should be activley controling anything that much. The engine shouldn't be knocking on its own too much and if it was you would just have to stop driving or if we lived in a better state 93 octane would probably fix it.

I put some octane boost in there on the way up. I drove with the stereo on very low to listen for knocks, it never did knock. I even gave it some gas too.

Here is a part from the honda tech manual:

Ignition Timing Control
·The ECM contains memories for basic ignition timing at various engine speeds and manifold pressures. Ignition timing is also adjusted for engine coolant temperature.
·A Knock Control System is also used. When detonation is detected by the knock sensor, the ignition timing is retarted(except F22A1 engine).

What if you went from a F22 to a H23 do you need it?
