Is there any way I can tell if the A/C system's been updated to R134-a (hoses, clamps etc)?

More information is needed to answer your questions.
What year is your Prelude?
R12 was used up until model year 1993
R134a was used from 1994 +
If your Prelude is a 1993 or older, it may have already been retrofitted to use 134a. The way to tell is by looking at the High and Low pressure service ports.
If it has a screw on black cap that when removed looks like a tire valve it is an R12 system
If it has a larger snap fit cap (blue (low side) and red (high side) it has been retrofitted to use 134a
the two refridgerant types are not compatible with each other. So if you currently have an R12 setup, it will have to be completely evacuated. The oil changed, & drier replaced for starters. And yes an R134a system charge is .8 of the R12 system charge. (example if the R12 system is 2.25lbs, .8*2.25=1.8). R12 is still readily available on ebay for cheap, so if your R12 system has not been retrofitted continuing to use R12 is also an option.
If the system has a low charge you obviously have a leak somewhere that needs to be addressed or else it will leak out again.
