JE pistons and oil consumption
I recently rebuilt my engine (H23) with JE 9:1 forged pistons and Crower rods. I put about 600 easy miles of both stop and go and highway driving on it to break it in. I never revved it above 3500 rpm. I then changed the oil at 600 miles. The next day I drove on the interstate for about 450 miles at about 70 to 80 mph with some pretty hard WOT runs on the on ramps. At times I accelerated from 70 to about 100. The maximum engine speed I have run is about 5500 rpm so far. When I checked the oil, I was missing about a quart and a half. The next morning, I started it up and it puffed quite a bit of smoke from the exhaust but quit within seconds after backing out of the parking space. That was the first time it had smoked since the rebuild. It didn't even smoke the very first time I started it once the engine was in the car again. It has not smoked on startup since then either and I am unsure if the oil consumption is still a problem. Has anyone who has installed JE or any other forged piston had a problem with oil consumption? I expected increased oil consumption due to the larger piston to cylinder clearances, but a quart and a half? Could It be that I drove it too hard too soon after the rebuild to allow the rings to seat? Surely 600 miles is enough to seat the rings. Any suggestions on the oil problem or should I just keep a case of oil with me? What about the random oil smoke problem? Should I do a leak down/compression test to see if something may not be right with some of the rings? Also, I should mention that at two rest stops oil smoke was coming out of the engine bay, but I could not locate the source of the smoke or where the leak was. It appeared to be from the tranny.
