JDM H22 owners: anyone else have problems with rad fans?

Do any other JDM H22 owners have problems with their radiator fan kicking on? Since my swap, I've noticed the radiator fan never turns on (at least not that I've noticed, even during long or aggressive drives. Both fans turn on just fine if the AC is switched on. I did install the USDM ECT sensor on the upper hose neck, so I don't think that is part of the problem. I suppose it's possible that one of my ECT sensors or control unit is on the fritz though.

My only kick on when the temp gauge pass the half way mark and after I shut the engine off after driving for awhile on a hot day.

I think that's normal.

<---- JDM ECU. I'm pretty sure the fan functions are controlled by a seperate unit, not linked to the ECU.

my fans are wierd now too. they NEVER come on after the car is off, and they only come on when the temp hits 210. i have an autometer temp gauge, and the fan comes on at 210, then brings the temp to 180, then shuts off, then the temp will rise again and the whole thing repeats itself. i have a jdm ecu.

red92s, I'm almost positive that the fan functions are controlled partially by the ECU. Being so, I would figure that you guys using the USDM harness and a JDM ECU, the wiring is different since the JDM harness and engine don't require the upper rad hose fan switch. I propose that one of you use a USDM ECU, with the upper rad hose fan switch installed, and see if the problem goes away.... I'm betting on it.

if you're going to put them switched, (which I completely forgot about suggesting to you guys) you should put them on an actual switch you can turn on and off, not have them on all the time. But for you JDM H folk, that's not a bad idea.. to put them on a switch you can turn on after you've been driving hard and such. wire them to a constant power, not a switched power so that you can leave them on after the car is off if need be, it comes in quite useful.. just don't forget about them

f&flude, your fan motors are going to go out much much much faster if you leave them that way, I suggest you put them on an actual switch. Also, having them on while on the fwy is pointless. You'd only want them on all the time (if need be) while city driving.

Ok.... Tim..

I figured I should reply.. I dont know whats te deal with your fans and all that stuff.. I know I just did my JDM h22 swap and ECU too... Honestly, my fans run fine.. ran for 5 minutes after I cut the car off yesterday... I also have an SI... So, if its the wiring related that is possible, but doesnt seem as likely as some ppl are stating! So, I dont know...

Yeah, so this is wierd. . .some people have problems, some don't.

All of the ECT sensors do not go to the ECU, they go to the rad control unit.

Jtcdude: did you use the upper hose neck from your H23?

Ya Tim....

I used that hose and everythign else that didnt match up... I do have a slight bend in my lower hose though(not enough to be a kink at all, but is was a bit stressed till i cut it to the right length... fnas worked b4 and after ) as the h23 and h22 sit slightly different as coolant goes... I cna really tell because the H23 slave cylinder was eating at my hose as it was rubbing.. Now I have some serious clearance....

BTW.. my fans did work after shut down for last 3 months of h23 as far as I knew... they just quit coming on afte rlong trips.. They woudl at red lights still and all... I wish I knew... Now, they kick on like new... Just a thought and some more confusion...

I have Jdm h22 with JDM p13. I used the upper hose switch. My fan kicks in great. I swapped from a S lude.

After i did the C&R radiator i only have one big fan but it always kicks in when the temp is right and the car shuts off. My car is running nice and cold, it takes a long time to heat up now, even when its hot outside.

Hey, I had this EXACT same problem. The cause is the engine coolant temperature switch A. It is located on the themostat housing. The one that came with my LB was toast. I just took the one off my H23 and it worked perfectly. Check out page 22-7 in your Helms, it has great troubleshooting tips.

HTH,
