JDM Electronic Door Handle?

Ok....ran into this while searching. Does it open the door for you (that would be cool)? I'm guessin it's just a light as well........anyone else know what the big deal is?

I believe i read/found somewhere that the JDM prelude used an infra-red type remote control to unlock/lock doors. The little "light" on the d/s door handle is the IR sensor.

Z is right, the JDM cars had remote locking/unlocking via a button on the key which you point towards the sensor on the door handle. The key in that ebay pic looks like a spare and as such won't do jack! It's really a pointless thing anyway, as almost everyone gets an alarm fitted which will have the function for remote locking when you arm/disarm anyway. I can say that I have never used the button on my key as I'd rather set the alarm if I'm away from the car.

Heh! Yeah, I've used the button on my key like five times in four years. It still works, though!

There are two little contacts on the edges of the key, and the key gets recharged while it's plugged into the ignition switch.

Kinda cool, but loses its worth once you get an alarm installed.

usually if there are wires coming off the handle like that they are Lock&arm/Unlock&disarm wires for the factory alarm.

Because this is an IR device, couldn't you take any IR learning device and program it to open the lock?

It would be sweet opening your car with your Palm Pilot.

That is cool IMO.

Tyler has a good point though, seems you could take any learning remote and steal the signal unless the Prelude system is code hoping or somthing.
