Issues with starting

Bought the lude non-running, been sitting for a few months. New main relay, fuel pump works good. It has a real hard time starting. Usually takes lots of tries to get her started, and once she is running, the idle is crazy. If I press on the gas, the car wants to stall, the rpms usually drop. Sometimes the idle doesn't bounce, but most of the time it does. Usually, if the car stays running for longer than 30 seconds, it runs for a few minutes, then stalls by itself. Sometimes, it just cranks, and doesn't start. I've read about the bouncy idle, there could be a few things wrong with that, but I dont think that just the bouncy idle would give me all these troubles. If anyone could point me to the right direction it would be appreciated.

try these things! research online for DIY's

clean throttle body

clean IACV (idle air control valve)

clean FITV (fast idle thermo valve)

new spark plugs

new spark plug wires

new distributor cap and rotor

new pcv

get compression test

there are many more things to consider, I am just naming a few.

iacv will more than likely have a big part in the stalling, i cleaned mine out not too long ago after my car started stalling on lights. that and a little adjustment on the throttle body took care of everything.

I replaced the FITV, problems still continued.
Today i cleaned the IACV, seemed like the bouncy idle was fixed, but after about 3 minutes of idling it came back. Not sure what to do now, any ideas? And btw, my intake tube is off, not sure if this would cause anything

what do you mean the intake tube is off? Is it connected to the throttle body?

did you clean the throttle body and checked the throttle cable? maybe you need adjustment.

after this your next step is to look into the fuel system.

-clean injectors

-replace fuel filter

-check fuel pump

-check all hoses and fuel lines

all of these can cause idling problems....

after you check the fuel system then start checking ignition...

- spark plugs

- spark plug wires

- distriputor cap and rotor

- distributor coil

- maybe you need a whole new dizzy?

- check all the grounds in the engine

Intake tube wasn't connected to the throttle body, i reconnected it today. I adjusted my idle screw, now appears that the idle is good. Rpms are about 1000. However, the engine sometimes stalls for no reason, maybe 1 out of 5 times it just stalls by itself, other 4 out of 5 times it idles perfect. Also, my tachometer is acting a bit crazy. When the engine is idling smooth, at constant rpms, the tachometer sometimes bounces from 1k to 3k rpms, but the actual rpms do not fluctuate. Any further tips would be appreciated, thanks

Okay, new update. The lude usually starts up, sometime it has a hard time, so i need to press on the gas a bit for it to start. Once running, it it idles normally. Sometimes the car just randomly stalls, but not often. Also, if i push the gas pedal really hard and fast, the rpms drop and the engine kinda backfires, or seems like it will stall. It doesn't stall, but if I step on the gas pedal too hard it just seems that way, seems like it doesn't want too much gas at once. Any ideas?

maybe it's something in the fuel system. When was last time fuel filter replaced? Also you might need to clean the injectors.
