Intake w/Header Wrap *PIC*

Well after I installed my ebay intake, I planned on wrapping it in header wrap.. and after i felt my intake after a few runs at the track, I had my mind set. You could hardly hold the pipe without being burned..

Plus, I didnt like the chrome finish.. so I bought this thermo tec black header wrap from summit racing, for like $38 shipped, it came in like 3 days, and i had JUST enough to finish it off, I'm talkin about 1.5 ft left over..

I got the 50' x 1" roll...

well, enough jabber, here's the pic.. looks like it means business!! I like it.. what about you?

note: if you do this, i recommend using rubber gloves while wrapping the pipe, because its fiberglass and it really gets in your hands! Also, wet the wrap previous to starting, so when it drys it will draw up.. This combined with constant pulling/straining will create a tight wrap!

so is it just the ebay intake that heats up, or even big name brand intakes?

yup, its any intake.. some intakes, like AEM are coated with "ceramic" or some heat resistant paint, but a thin coating of paint can only do but so much..

Actually, a thin coat of ceramic does a lot. Turbine blades used in gas turbine engines use a ceramic coating that reduces the temperature the turbine blade sees by over 50 degrees farenheight. Don't underestimate thin thermal barier coatings.

Nice!

I ainted mine with ceramic based paint to try to keep the temps down. Then I sprayed some clearcoat over that:

I'm sure the header wrap is better... Maybe I'll do that too

Ohh yes I know ceramic paint does help alot! I had it on an intake I made for my previous car, a Truck.. it made quite a difference, sprayed it inside and out..

the heat wrap might work a little better, but if you already have ceramic paint on your intake then it might not be worth it..

and honestly, i drove my car around a few times, and for 30+ minute sessions, and my intake NEVER got hot without any coating.. i was suprised.. THEN I took it to the track, a good 5 runs back to back and it was scalding.. now it stays cool to the touch.. so i am confident that it decreases intake temps enough to make a difference..

G_loc, just saw your picture, wow that looks very nice!

yea I saw that intake cover thing, how much was it?

Let me know how it works also! The reason I went with this is because I wanted it to be black. Looks like us prelude guys are function over form, I like that! hehe

You should wrap the header.

It will keep underhood temps down, as well as keeping the exhaust gasses hot and flowing fast. (more power)
Also makes the cat more efficient.

Its even more important to wrap the header when your using a short ram intake.

The biggest difference will come from wrapping the header....

Don't worry about the intake.

Your intake is physically hot to the touch from heat soak, but once your on the track, the intake temps cool down drastically.

But don't take my word for it... what would I know

Well for one i have the factory exhaust manifold with teh heatshield, no reason to even bother.. and I probably wont wrap any header that i get.. one reason, it promotes corrosion/rust(not something to worry about with an aluminum intake that will never reach any more than 150-200 deg)... not a good thing..
