Installing rear 1992 console?

Ok, I've got the possibility of getting one. What am I up for as far as difficulty? Never seen one of these in real life, so I haven't the foggiest what I'll need besides the actual bin. Any peeps that have this in their ride or have put one in, throw me a line! And I heard it's lockable; what key would it use? Thanks guys!

What year is your car? anything after 93 you will need to buy a 93 e-brake handle and mounts because the consoles are very different from 93 to 94.

Shouldnt be that difficult since you have a 93. Take out the old console and thingy between the rear seats first. There is a large metal bracket which you will need to install before the actual console. I would HIGHLY recomend taking out the front seats and the e-brake portion of the console. . .you will get a lot more room to work!! As for the key, I'm not really sure what you can do. . .maybe a dealer or a locksmith can somehow get the lock core to match your current keys. Or you could just use the key that comes with it and hide it somewhere inside the car.

I just leave mine unlocked!
I didn't need to take the seats out, but it would have been (a little) easier if I had.

The key is the same one used to get into and start your car. No separate key should be needed. But then again I can only speak for MY car.

It's not difficult. I did the swap in my car and it only took an hour or two. You've gotta take out the entire back seat (except the part that flips down, you can just flip it down to get to the screws). You definitely have to take out the e-brake part of the console, the '92 console is just one piece that starts just behind the gearshift and ends at the backseats. I found it was helpful to take the piece surrounding the radio and gearshift off also, helped to get the rest situated right. I did NOT need to take out the front seats, I really don't think it would have helped all that much.

As far as the lock goes, I grabbed the key out of the same car I got the console from and now carry 2 car keys. I would have thought finding a car key in a junkyard to be a needle in a haystack, but it was right there in the door

If you need anymore help, email me, mciampag@vt.edu. I did that swap just a month or so ago so it's real fresh in my memory.

edit: Where are you getting it from, junkyard, friend, ebay? It should be just one real long piece.

red92s: What do you mean by 'metal bracket'? The console I got popped right in, no metal bracket to speak of.

Yeah, mine had a big metal bracket that helped secure everything together. You could probably install the console without it, I think its just designed to make everything nice and solid. I can take pics saturday.

I think I know what guys are talking about. There is a metal bracket underneath all the plastic crap on the outside, but it came out of the junked car in 1 piece, and I never bothered taking it apart. So I guess there may or may not be some assembly required.

Cool guys, thanks a ton for this! There's a dude on the board that is planning on replacing his 92's interior with a leather interior and I've asked him for dibs on the rear console; he also informed me that a nearby yard has one as well. I just want to make sure that either way, I get everything that I need to do this correctly. Don't know what I'd be able to do with the key situation though... have to check around on that. But as more info comes closer, I'll mos def be getting in contact with a couple of ya about doing this little project. Thanks again!!!

Yeah. Sorry about being a goofus on that key thing. I wasn't thinking that the key from YOUR car would NOT fit the lock on the new CONSOLE. Don't know why you couldn't get a locksmith to make you a key or order a new lock from a dealer.

Check this link. I beleive item #11 is what you need. $8.30.

I'll bet it would be easiest and cheapest to have a locksmith make a key for that lock. It won't match your car, but it should only cost a few bucks, and what's one more key on your ring anyway?

Well I think the keys COME with that lock. Last time I hadda get a locksmith to cut a key it was expensive. BUT that was because the guy had to come TO the car and make the key on site. Boy you could make a killing!

Just understand one thing. The 92 console does not have the cut-out spaces for putting switches like the 93 and 94-96 models
