Input on subwoofer enclosures (4g specific)

I'm toying around with an idea for a 4g subwoofer enclosure between the rear seats. I'm thinking of basicly building something to replace this piece:

It would be slightly larger than the oem piece and hold one or two 8" or 10" subwoofers. Obviously, it would be another fiberglass job and would probably intrude on the useability of the rear seats, so I'm thinking it would be better for show cars, not daily drivers. Anyone have input before I waste my time and money on this project?

I can't think of anyway speakers would look good being in that spot. I thought about removing the bottom of the rear seats and fabricating some kind of enclosure that went in each seat maybe a 10 for each side. You lose the rear seat but no one really sits back there anyways.

I was thinking like 2 8"s at staggered angles all in a line, with fluid curves from the fiberglass. Kinda like this (from an S2000):

I think it's a cool idea.

A little OT:

How much do you think one of these in good shape is worth?

can you stuff some 10's behind the trim piece on the sides? For instance, if by some grace of god you actually sat in the back seat and were facing forward, it would be the piece you rest your arm on the outside. My friend stuffed two 10's in his accord in that spot and it sounds great! I would love something like that. Free up trunk space and still be able to fit my newspaper in the back.

A lot depends on what kind of bass response you're looking for... 8's, 10's, 12's --- all produce a different response, as well as the obvious difference of woofer brand and driving power. Either way, the cleanest thing to do, and yet still maintain your back seat, is to build the box in the trunk and port it thru the center of the seats. Easy to do, especially if you have worked with fiberglass... There are a lot of different box designs you can build and still maintain the back seat AND at least half of the trunk... just some advice though -- if you are just looking for a good solid bass, though i haven't actually done this yet, 1 12" should be plenty if you build the box correctly. Back in '91, I had 2 Cerwin Vega dual voice coil 12's in an '86 CRX Si, driven by a 260 Harmon Kardon amp, in a perfectly designed enclosure (took me 5 tries but I finally got it just right thanks to help from a friend who worked for Fosgate in AZ at the time)... the thing ROCKED... of course, I had NO back of the seat area and I replaced window seals a couple times.... And now I have about a 1/3 less hearing.... Good luck with your project and post pics!!!!

if you want a nice project i say you take out both rear seats and make an enclosure there that holds 2 15s, one one each side....that would look cool, and you can finally have use for the rear seats in our car

If you want two 8'' why dont you try putting them in the rear side panels and somehow fiberglass it in so you can still sit people back there or you could try cutting 8" holes out of the rear seats recess the speakers and put some clear plastic over it with vents to protect it when people sit there. Just some ideas i dont know if it would actually work with clearance. Post some pics when your done!

thanks for the input. This will probably be another one of the projects I do just for kicks and to build my skills. . .if I dont like the results, no biggie.

kismet: I've got quite a bit of experience building space saving prelude stereos (4th and 5th gen). Run a search with my name in the audio forum to see some of my previous work.

Anybody want to buy my custom fiberglassed spare tire enclosure? It fits two 10" subs. I took it out, b/c my old amp fried for the second time, and I'm done w/ crazy stereo systems in my ride. It cost me 500 bones to have done at a place called Soundtrack in Colorado. If you're interested, lemme know. The only problem is that I don't have a digi cam. Obviously, I won't be charging anywhere near 500 to sell it.

didnt someone do this with a 6" a while back?

if you do it, you will have to reinforce it pretty well, maybe even make a box for the 8"s cause if you use the trunk for a "box" you will have waaayyy to much airspace for 8's
