Impressions on doing H23 timing belt

This weekend I tore my car apart to change out the timing belt and water pump. I am at 169,000 and I figured with my driving habits it would be a better safe than sorry type of thing. But when I pulled them out the belts looked really good, but better safe than sorry

anyways, I read all the posts and to all those who are thinking of doing this themselves.... there are certain things you need to know before tackleing this.

-you NEED the honda crank holder tool... I tryed everything and I finally had to use a huge C clamp and damage the pulley slightly to keep it still to get the crank bolt off.

-The crank bolt is without a doubt one of the hardest bolts to get off on a 4 cylinder car I have ever touched. SO, either have enough extentions to get past the fender (about 18" worth) and 6' of piping to use a breaker bar and High quality 1/2" tools. Or have a high quality air impact wrench.

at this point I am only half finished with the job due to spending hours trying to get the pulley bolt off without having the correct tools. AND more importantly auto zone sold me a water pump and timing belt for the FVCKING SOHC 2.2l motor

so know I have to wait till wed to get the parts then next weekend to finsh the job.

Overall, this a very do able job for someone that has paitence and knowledge of engines in general. If you can replace a clutch or a drive axel or something like that then you can do this. Just leave yourself lots of time and make sure you have the right tools and parts

When I did mine, I didn't think it was that bad for how much money I saved.

You think a honda oem built is actually built any differently than a generic brand?

I am going to be doing a H23vtec or JDM H22 in the future so then I will use oem parts. For now its just to get by until then.

the brank they carried was goodyear...which is pretty reputable.
other than making fords exploding tires

LOL ..

Not hate on this guy .. Just curious about doing this install myself, is a hugeass breaker bar still required if you have air tools ?? My step dad has a grand daddy of an air compressor ...

I'm thinkin of tackling this one this summer as well as replacing some seals and such.

Prove that the Goodyear timing belts are indeed made of inferior materials than the OEM Honda belts. I have seen more than one performance motor put many miles on a Goodyear belt and it held up like a champ.

I am using a Goodyear belt on my H23 VTEC. And yes, Autozone also gave me the wrong belt......

Air tools makes most all car tasks easier.

you're not suggesting that autozone parts like water pumps and timing belts are better made than Honda parts, are you?
