Importance of replacing oil drain gasket

About 1000 miles ago I did an oil change. Recently I ahve been loosing lots of oil (not sure yet if its a leak or burning oil). I just realized I did not change the oil drain plug gasket when I did the oil change (service manual recommends you change it everytime). Is there anyway this could be causing a leak?

I just want to cover every minor possibility, before I start diagnosing for big problems causers.

Thanks, jordan

It's possible. Honda strongly reccommends changing that drain plug gasket when changing the oil. Funny, it was even in my automotive (Engine Overhaul) text book this semester as a side note. Most of the stuff in the book was about domestics. Honda must really make sure people know about that!

I never have. I don't have any leaks from there yet.

psshh...I changed mine once, I haven't changed it since. I think it's stupid. Never changed it on my old Accord either, if I'm correct, it has the same one the car came with in 1989 when the car was bought brand new as a 1990 model. I am 98% sure it's the original, my dad hasn't ever changed it, and I didn't when I had the car. It now has about 190,000 and leaks/burns NO oil.

I always change mine but I don't think many people ever do. When I first got the car the old gasket/washer was almost seized onto the bolt. You should stick some cardboard under the car one night and see if it's leaking from that point. The washers are cheap so you can always do it at the next oil change.

if you guys are talking about the crush washer on the drain bolt, i always change that when i do oil changes. just stop by your local honda dealer and they'll give you one for free. maybe it's just my dealer that gives them away though?

Mine gives them to me for free too. They tape it right on to the filter when I buy it.

Its a special bi-metal washer. 2 types of aluminum, one side is softer then the other so it crushes against the bolt, and makes a seal on the pan.
You should replace it everytime you change your oil. When I worked at Valencia Honda, we would just give em away if you came in a bought a filter, if you wanted just the washer, I think they were like .21 each.
Its less then a quarter, just buy the washer.

it's stupid. Honda should just design a better bolt/pan thread so you don't need that annoying "crush washer". And only you and Honda dealers will remember to replace it....

Also check your oil pressure sensor. Those things are notorious for leaking. If it is leaking then you can pick one up from Advanced Auto, Autozone etc. for about 7 bucks.

Drjames... How can I tell what is leaking without replacing items and then seeing if the oil still leaks?
