I would like to drive my car off a cliff. (valve tap)

Well, my engine sucks. Yep, there you go. My Valves tap like no other car I've heard. It's either 1 valve, or 1 pair of valves. It's always been a little noisy, but for the last few months it has gotten VERY loud. Well, today I decided to adjust the valves, figuring it would at least quiet it down a bit. Well, i adjusted the valves: intake .09 exhaust .17 just as the sticker on the underside of the hood says for a 92 Si. WHAT DO I DO? Is there anyway to make it quiet down? I even tried changing to a slightly thicker oil...didn't do squat. Do I just have to live with it until the engine goes or what? I am very annoyed with my car at the moment.

An H22 would fix that valve tap.

hmm 15w40, try that. I used that in my old lude, who cares about valve tap anyways. u cant fix it , live with it! CRANK your STEREO! if you got a stock system buy a better one, if not, then put a 75 shot of zex untill the motor pops!

well, mine used to have the "normal H23" valve tap, ask brendon or alan, mine is LOUD. Time to save up for a new motor I fear. And I've got 10W 40 in there right now, it didn't help at all.

I hope that you realize that the numbers under the hood for the valve clearances are listed in mm not Inches. And the engine must be under 100 degrees, preferably completly cold. Valve tap is a normal thing with the lude. Especially the h23.

yep, I used my MM feeler guages for both, also I let the car sit overnight in the garage so it was COLD when I did the adjustment in the morning. James, will the tapping cause any premature wear on the valve train? If the engine had always tapped like this, I wouldn't be concerned, but it has only been this loud for the last couple months.

also, it's only 1 valve, or 1 pair of valves, not all of them.

I totally feel you!!!

i totally understand how you are feeling.
i can't get rid of the valve tapping in my car either-although i am pretty sure that it's not as loud as urs. it sounds like a blacksmith is hammering at my engine rapidly. i have also done numerous valve adjustments with no results. i have tried differnt oil additives, changed the weight of the oil, played around with the idle and timing too. my cousin who use to work at honda as a mech. said that it's probably worn valve stems or springs or it's a design flaw with the engine. since i don't have money for a new car i have to live with it; turning up the stero helps alot though
just run ur car till the engine blows.

Ryan it's not just you I got tapping like a mofo when my car iscold. and when it warms up it's a little better cuz I'm using a thicker oil and one can of Engine restore per oil change. when my first motor blew at 190k it was tappping really really bad. So I know what a crapped out motor sounds like..and this aint it so I'm happy, I just crank my stereo. the exhaust and intake help too. Try using some underhood Dynamat to really quiet it down

How many miles you have, Cantdrive?

Mine is bad, too. I plan on an adjustment in the spring. I learn to live with it.

You guys haven't heard my parents' Mazda MPV which I have the unfortunate-ness of driving. STart it on a chilly day, and it'll click and clack like nothing else. In fact, I rev the guts out of the damn thing to stop it from ticking, but I think that's bad for your cylinder rings. Drive it for 30 minutes, and stop. It'll start ticking.

As for valve ticking, I heard it was normal for H23 Preludes, as are H22s for running super-rich.

Engine Restore

(Engine Restore) I used that in my 93 vtec when it had 80,000 miles on it and I swear that spunk dragged my car so much I had to set another oil change quick..
don't use that unless your car has like 200,000 miles.
that **** is THICK.
