I forgot to mention what colors it was, oops! The emblam is actually black, I realize it looks polished but thats because the clear coat over the paint makes it reflective when under hard light. It's hard to type im shivvering its freezing in here haha.
Heres what I did:
1.) Degrease Cover in a parts cleaner (you can use what ever degreaser youd like as long as its aluminum safe)
2.) Sprayed a product called "Aircraft Remover" Scary stuff!! Sprayed it on like CRAZY.. Soaked the cover. Let it sit for no more then maybe 60 seconds and hosed it off killing the grass in a portion of the backyard
3.) hooked up a small sized wire brush with a medium bristle to my corded drill.. I then brush aluminum looked it but at the same time scuffed the surface in prep for paint and removed what ever black coating was stuck in pores and crevices.
4.) Made sure there was no finger grease or other dirt on the cover by wiping it down with a fresh clean rag.
5.) Painted it Bumper chrome, looks way shiny when painted.. layed on about 4-5 coats of bumper chrome (Not heat resistant)
6.) Got some Dupli color High heat With Ceramic Clear coat #DE1636 and layed on 7 coats.. Each time blow drying the cover till dry since its way below 60° this time of year, the blow drying was necessary or the clear would have never dried on its own.
After I had about 2 coats of clear on the project, i then used a perminant marker sharpie to paint over the honda emblem and letters. haha yup a sharpie!! It doesn't dry and totally cover the letters so i clear coated it once i had dried the sharpie bit of it, and then proceed to color over the letters and emblem yet again with the sharpie this time what ever wasnt coloed in before was this time and it came out pretty damn good. I re-cleared it again and again after that drying each time and now the black letters are trapped in the clear and will not come off unless something can damage a few coats of clear 900° engine paint.
The reason for the paint on the cover itself not being heat resistant is because anything I've ever painted silver was always this combination of products. Never had any issues with it peeling flaking or burning off what so ever..
mind you, I do not paint extra hot acessories like blocks, heads, or headers. Just brackets Cam covers and random things like that.
Thanks for the cool feedback guys I apprecite it and I'll take pics of the new bay when I'm done painting up several other things 9possibly including the intake pipe.)
My Car is Dark green, you're right its next to impossible to create an appealing engine bay with that sort of color on the vehicle. Sorry for the long post, i just wanted to let all know how i did it incase they are tired of the old flaking off black coating too. ~ Brett
