I need help/guidance on h22 swap

Ok, here is the deal...

I NEED to get my H22 into my Si asap. The problem is, I have NO expierience as far as pulling a motor, pulling a tranny, swapping, etc. Ive been studying ALL of the FAQ swap forums, and i could sit here and tell you step by step how its done. I have all of the tools, and most of all, a HELMS.

But, should i try it by myself?? Or should i pay someone to guide me through the process???

EDIT: also, how long did it take you guys to do ur swaps? Hours, days, etc

depend on how comfortable you are working on it, if you think its too much then pay someone to do it. I did my swap myself and it took me a week w/ just working on it in the evenings.

If you are the least bit mechanically inclined and have a lot of patience then I say go for it. It took me and my friend 6 hours to pull it and about 12 more to be ripping around the block. If you need help ask some people on here.

Good luck. Take photo's and lets see another write up from a newb perspective. If you can pull it off you'll be inspiring for when I do my swap. =)

Took me 1 day to remove the first engine, then 2 days to put it in. Thats including Completely dismantling the jdm wire harness and rebuilding my S harness. That took a while myself.

But the second time, i pulled the engine in the morning, returned it got a replacement then had the new engine in and ready to go that night. I needed to pick up fluids so it started the next day. Once everything is broken loose everything is easy.

hmm, The first time is the worst. You will have alot of clips everywhere holding wires and hoses. The Hardest part of doing it yourself is actually lifting the engine out and back in. Takes a little guiding but it can be done. I did it twice.

Doing it yourself is the way to go, after you finish you will know alot more about your car and not be afraid of working on anything.

If you need any help send me an AIM or hit me up on email. subpopx@hotmail.com

You'll be fine with PO.com faqs, posts, and the Helms manual. That's how I managed to do my swap. Can PM me if you have any questions. Later..

With experiance you can get a whole swap done in a single day from drive in to drive out, so it's not really that hard, it's just getting the feel for it. I've pulled a motor from my lude(s) (4th gens) 3 times, the first is the longest, took all day and night, second and third were a matter of hours. I'll let you know that the trickiest things are.. the heater hose that connects from the heater core to the water pipe right next to the water pump... that thing is a BIATCH to get off.. on either end. I've never not had trouble with it And on both ludes I've damaged my heater core outlet trying to get the fuker off, so be VERY careful if you try to get it off on that end (easier to get to) but if you can, try to get it off the water pipe side, it's much safer in terms of damaging things. Um, make sure when you're pulling the motor, you're lifting it a LOT higher on the drivers side than the tranny side, you have to angle it out because of the trans and makes it a lot easier the more angled you have it. Getting to and hooking back up the VSS is a pain!.. do it last when taking it out and first when putting it back in!(most room in both cases to get to it). Hmm... I think those are the trikiest parts that stick out in my mind.

Good luck!

Make a list of things that are giving you troubles as you go along .. write it down and post it up for us, or reply to one of the original h22 swap faq threads .. with an engine swap and from a beginner standpoint theres never too much info.

do it yourself it's a good learning experience, the most time consuming part of it for me was cutting up the jdm harness and adding the wires that i needed. and running the wires around the engine. also did the internal to external coil conversion.

P.S. there are certain techniques to help you get the engine out easier, its is hard as hell to get it out if you dont know what youre doing, do a search..

I dont have the JDM motor, Im using the US H22. So as far as "cutting up the harness" goes, I dont have to do that, right? ONly run the 2 extra wires for vtec?

yeah i had to cut up the JDM harness because mine was the base model S not the Si and was not prewired for VTEC, so i got the connectors/wires from the jdm harness...

just so theres no confusion, yes all you have to do is run the extra wires... good luck!

You'll have fun pulling it yourself; just take it slow, check everything twice before moving forward, and make sure everything's out of the way first.

I did it for the first time w/ just the help of my cousin, who knows nothing about these cars. I didn't label a thing; I just unplugged everything, left all connectors and hoses where they were, and pulled that motor out. I got the motor back in easily, and now everything's fairly easy to figure out where it all goes and plugs in. I have the Helms to help me w/ the plugs and hoses I can't figure out.

Like said before, you will just get a feel for how everything goes. One big tip is to basically have the cranki-pulley side of the motor almost straight up in the air, w/ the tranny sitting very low.

A prybar makes life much easier, also.

Wear Mechanix gloves if you value your hands.

Air tools makes life MUCH MUCh easier.

If you can't pry the hose off w/ a screwdriver, then just slice it w/ a razor/knife. You'll end up breaking something if you get too rough with it.
