I'd go ahead and replace the timing belt and water pump as it will be way easier with the motor out of the car.

Emissions depends on what state you live in so check your local laws.

these are my emissions for ct

Parameters of the Inspection
The emissions inspection includes the following tests:

Gas cap leakage
An onboard diagnostics exam for vehicles 1996 or newer
An acceleration exam for vehicles 1995 or older
An idling test for some vehicles
Special tests for diesel-powered vehicles

smog and emission stuff shouldnt be a problem as long as you are running a cat. The swap should be really simple just make sure you remember where all the plugs come from its not hard to figure out if you forget but it goes much faster. Also before you get into it make sure your motor mounts are good and you have all the right size belts and hoses. My swap took me almost a week because I had to chase around motor mounts and different random parts I should have checked for before I started.

I dont think that you can do that because the heads arent the same. It might work but I doubt it.

The only difference internally between the two engines are the cams - the H23's are high-rpm optimized. You'll notice a definite difference in high-rpm performance, that's about it. You MIGHT be able to switch the cams, not sure. Low end torque is about the same. Mine's been running over three years with zero probs. ECU stayed the same. All smog stuff stayed the same. Knock sensor attachment point is different. Mine is just c-clamped near where it would have been on the H23. Works fine. ONLY BURN PREMIUM. Read that again. This is an extremely cost-effective swap. Mine's an automatic, again no probs making the switch, and I'm completely satisfied... didn't even have to evacuate the A/C. Recommend changing the timing belt while its accessable, unless you can afford a major rebuild. Not worth the risk. Do it now. I use 10-40 Mobile 1 syn.

Aight man, I'm no genius but I just got done swappin my h22 for a jdm one into my 93. Heres everything that I had to swap from old to new:
-Intake Manifold
-Distributor (JDM ones have internal coils and I liked my external)
-Power Steering pump and bracket, along with the belt
-A few sensors connected directly to the block, one specifically was on a piece on the front that runs straight to the radiator.
-Transmission and clutch, because I just bought an engine

It took me a few weeks, but thats me working like 2 pm to midnight at work 5 days a week. And not knowing jack about what I was doing...

Idk why you had to swap out intake manifolds all I had to do with my H23 to H22 was swap out the throttle bodies so I could keep my map sensor on the firewall.

I just liked the look of my old one better, it was a little bigger bc the JDM engine I got was alot newer and had an almost completely different throttle on it and was automatic, and my cruise has been disconnected a while. I did some unnecessary things to mine but I think I did pretty good for not knowin what I was doing and didnt have a manual
