i almost give up...

Ok so I was trying to tighten up my alternator belt because it sqeuaks like hell when its under load. First I just tried tightening the adjustment bolt... but I soon realized that needed to be done in conjuction with the locknut I believe. So I looked at the locknut, after somewhat noticing I had no ideal in hell what kind of tool fit on the end of it... I just said F it and started to remove my cruise so I could just take off my PS pump belt and have a clearer picture... but I ended up somewhat getting into a fight with my friend... which kind of doesnt really matter because I was stuck getting the connector off. So my question is this... what the hell did I do wrong? and what the hell is the easiest way to tighten this belt.

p.s. would using too much belt dressing make it worse?

First you have to loosen the the long bolt thats inderneath the alternator , then in the front of the alternator there is a 10mm? nut which will allow you to tighten the belt.

DO NOT USE BELT DRESSING !!!!!

It makes a mess BIG sticky mess!!!!

If your belts are old the best thing to do is replace them, (theyre cheap).

Power steering belt. you do not need to remove cruise control, loosen lock nut on tension bolt then loosen tension bolt, loosen the upper and lower nuts closest to engine block and the bolt on left side. then simply remove the belt and replace. tighten tension bolt to spec 10-12mm of deflection, secure lock nut, tighten the upper and lower nuts as well as the bolt on left, drive then recheck deflection adj as needed.

while your at it you might as well do the alt belt as well.

alt belt, the easiest way to do this one is to not only loosen the p/s unit but to remove it from its mount move to side.

loosen upper mount bolt, and adjuster, you may have to loosen the lower bolt that has the threaded end of the adj bolt connected to it.

IMPORTANT leave belts in house over night, or out in the sun so they are warm try to pre-stretch using hand and foot. Getting the alt belt on when cold is a B**ch

tighten to spec and replace p/s pumpand belt, drive and recheck deflection on both tighten as needed.

here are some sites that you may be able to use as well,

And remember if you can't get the alt or power-steering belt on at first - you can always use the engine to help put the belts on. Our engines spin counterclockwise - so if you can get most of the belt on the alt or ps pulley on the top right - you can crank the car for 1-2 seconds and as the crank pulley turns, it will pull the new belts onto the alt or ps pulley
