So my lude has about 172xxx miles so everything is just a little worn. As you guys have probably noticed I've had a few threads now about its different issues and your ideas have all helped me reach solid resolutions so i'm calling out again.
I got this car knowing that the tranny may have problems, and the guy i got it from said second was bad and 5th had issues. i've put about 300 miles on it now since getting it running, and i've only noticed that second has problems, all the other gears shift in and out just fine and don't pop out of gear. second gear though will grind shifting both up and down in gears about 80% of the time. doesn't matter is its 2k rpm or 5k rpm. if i shift nice and slow sometimes it will go in with out a grind. also if i'm in the higher rpm range and suddenly let off it will spit it out of gear. it will also do this while turing on and off streets which can be frustrating since thats my gear of choice for such times.
if there are any questions i can answer to help shed more light on the problem please ask and i will answer best i can. i don't want to buy a whole new tranny, but if its an easy fix then i'd be willing to drop the tranny to fix it and throw in a new clutch. plus it would give me an excuse to install my fidanza flywheel i have.
well i dunno if this helps u or not
but i think its ur gear synchros im not really good with transmission
i had a friend with 94 del sol 150k plus miles that did the same
the 2nd gear would grind and pop out if u dont hold it
he takes about 5 second to shift from 1st to 2nd to limit the grind
my 00 civic si grinds in 3rd when i really punch it but it doesn't grind if i shift smoothly, well try to see if u can take it to a shop that does manual trans rebuild either that u can find a junk yard that has the manual tranny for cheap but i'd say if the car is at that milage go to the junk yard and find a used tranny u'll saved the cost of a rebuild one
and yeah i used a fidanza flywheel 7lb with exedy clutch and i really loved it
its been 4 years now and it still great i like how the rpm just rise up and drops quicker
i will be doing the same setup to my lude in the summer
So I found a guy that just pulled his 5 speed from a 95 f22 car for $150. Has 110,000 miles. How can I check it to make sure its good? and what differences can I expect both physical and performance wise with this transmission?
I also just bought a new starter, would I need to get a new one and axels, or will it be fine with the f22 tranny? i guess I should add that i have an h22a1 in my car.
if ur axle isnt torn or rip then u can use the same one
i know a shop that rebuilds the cv joints for 40 bucks each i mean its not bad
and will last a lil longer but if ur in a budget u can use the same one
and if ur engine is an h series and u use f series tranny i dont see any problem
i saw a swap the guy had h22 and use f series tranny
he said it was fine,
ur car will run as long as the tranny is in good shape ,
change out the clutch and flywheel or bring it to a shop and let them resurface.
if u gonna do it once then do it all so u wont be taken things out apart again
i forgot which forum i was at need to go back to work and get the link

I got lucky, its actually a M2S4 which i belive is from an H23. So for $100 i got the tranny and a near new clutch kit. I think over the next couple days I should have the old out and the new in along with this clutch and my fidanza flywheel. I wont mess with the axels, but I have new ruber boots for them, anything else I should look into getting?
Everything has been going super smooth, but I hit a brick wall when I got to undoing the ball joints. I bent the damn y thing trying to try it loose, I'll update later once I find out if a good soak in wd-40 helped. If anyone has any tips let me know please.
i never taken out a prelude tranny apart before but as i rememebr taken out my civic si apart the left axle theres liek 2 parts theres 2 bolts thats hook on to the frame if u get those to loosen up the 2 parts of the axle gets seperated
but this is a while ago and it was my first time doing it
some people might do it diffrently
look around and see wats connected to it and work ur way around it
Ok so after a few frustrated nights and some heavy lifting, I got the new transmission all installed with the new clutch, fidanza flywheel, and a set of axels. It seems though that I have created as many problems as I may have solved. Now I have the surging idle and an oil leaking coming from the back side of the engine (its dripping off that thing thats right below the oil filter and its oily up to the filter but not past). I didn't switch my vss, I left it all hooked up and mearly just unbolted it from the trans and moved it out of the way. What could have caused these two issues? I have yet to lower the car back down until I figure out whats going on, so please throw some ideas out there.
That new flywheel rocks though, spins up super quick. A deffinite must add if you have everything apart.
make sure ur oil filter is tight
i been having an oil leak on my car same spot where u said
i bought the car and put in 5 miles on the engine and just left it there
im waiting for a nice day to take the head off apart and the intake manifold to have a better look at the problem, and as for the flywheel im glad u like it
im so used to my old car with the fidanza flywheel that i want to put it in this one but now its the oil issue that i have a mystery about
good luck finding the issue let me know if u have find it and if i find my problem i let u know too
have fun
If you have a leak from the oil-filter area, it's most probably from the oil cooler. The cooler is the thing beneath the filter, where you attach the filter. Just remove the filter and the one bolt that holds the cooler in place, and change the o-ring.
i'll give the o-ring thing a shot, i thought it might be that but i didn't want to mess with it until i heard someone else say it haha.
so here is a bit more detail about my surging issue. it doesn't do it until the car is warmed up, and i didn't even touch any vaccum line while i changed the tranny. once warmed up vtec works and it pulls harder than ever, but at an idle the car just sits and surges from 1200 to 2000, but my gauge is a bit off anyhow so those numbers arn't science. i don't even know where to start since i don't have any cel. and i've sprayed a bunch of carb cleaner down it and several vaccum line to no avail. if i unblug the map sensor tube and plug it, the car gets a really dark exaust and stops surging until the cel turns on. any ideas?
Just going to quote some suggestions made by others on this forum.
It's very common to these "old" engines, and normaly easy to fix

Both TPS and MAP sensors will throw a CEL if they're bad so if you're not getting one then they most likely aren't the culprit. I had the same idle as you, would climb up to 2k then drop and bounce like that.
-Adjust Idle screw on Throttle Body
-Bad MAP sensor
-Throttle Positioning Sensor
-Clean Your IAC Valve (really easy)
-Possibly air in coolant lines
-Vacuum line leak
so i took off the head after figuring out where the oil had leak from
it was from the passenger side of the engine in the back
the bolt to that side of the head wasnt as tight as the other side
had also replace my speed sensor, hot oil got on it that it crap out
it was easy to change when the head was out,
the head gasket was almost new since the manifold on both side gasket looks like it was been replace some half ass mechanic forgot to tighten up the bolt and cause an oil leak well anyway i replace it just to stay safe
everything was put back together and start the engine and also while the car was sitting on jack stand i just throw it in gears to see if my trip and speed work and it did. so far no oil leak now i need to realign the timing gears with the pulley to get a good stable idle
