I got my engine on Friday and have been working on it today. First thing I have to say, HOLY S**T IS THE CRANK PULLEY BOLT TIGHT!!!! I have my dad jam a forged prybar into the flexplate and I had a 4 foot lever arm on the bolt with all my 180 lbs. and it still wouldn't budge. I had to bounce on the end of the bar to get the bolt to go. The prybar now looks like an "S" and the flexplate it toast (don't care, it was comming off anyway). We figured that it took 600+ ft-lbs of torque to break that thing loose.
Got it from Hmotorsonline. It ended up being $1587.06 shipped to my dads work. I got the longblock, downpipe, and an ECU.
I am not planning on installing until late June, but having it sitting out there on the engine stand makes me want to install it next week.
The motor is amazing, it can't have any more than 10000 miles on it. The only real snag I have found is that since it is off an automatic the TB is different. The ID of it is like 57mm instead of 61mm on my H23. I am prolly just going to pull the TB off my H23 and put it on the H22.

That's what I'd do, since they are interchangeable.
So, you got the complete engine, ecu and downpipe, but what about a tranny? Do you know how much extra that would be?

congrats jason, thats wierd about your crank pulley being THAT tight, mine came off with the air impact wrench no prob. they are torqued to 159ft/lbs...anyway let me know if you need any help since i live so close to you and just did my swap last month
marsh
Marsh, will do. I am really tempted to put this thing in next week as the U is out but I am not really ready. I need to get the injectors cleaned and a clutch.
I was really shocked by the torque on the pulley as well. We snapped a 1/2 to 3/8 drive adapter as well as a 3/8 drive wrench. Then went to sears and got a 19mm impact socket. After some bending and cussing the thing finally let go.
Is the ECU for a Manual tranny??
I take it the sensors were all intact
For the tranny portion is it a direct bolt?
This is probaly what my plan is as well since I need a reliable daily driver.
Congrats on the purchase and goodluck
Hey man,
If you're gonna put a stock clutch back in it, I have one for sale. That is if the h23 and h22 clutchs are the same. I think they are. Anyway, I just put as brand new one (not a reman.) in my h23 before the engine blew and don't need it now. It has about 500 miles on it. Let me know.
Wait a minute.. the Atup h22 TB is smaller than the 5 speed motors. mine was an auto and im using the TB from it. are u sure this is correct? could be why my idle is so funky... someone help me out here.

I'm positive the two tb's are different in size, but how much diff., I'm not sure.

Like I said, the TB on the auto is about 57 mm and the H23 manual is about 61 mm.
As for the tranny, yes, it is a direct bolt-on.
The ECU is a JDM P13 manual tranny 2 wheel steering ECU.
On the sensors, the TPS and the intake air temp were broken/missing but Steve attached replacements to their respective plugs on the harness and tucked them safely away. I have every sensor I will need.
As for the clutch, I am planning on putting a stock one back it. I might be interested in your clutch for the right price. I can get a full clutch kit (clutch, pressure plate, throw-out bearing, alignment tool) for $97.
I am really looking forward to the install. I just got the downpipe modified so that will bolt-up. I do have a question for you. Can I take the entire top portion of the IM off the H23 and put it on the H22? I mean the whole thing from the butterflies to the TB.
