How to: (with pics) Tighten up that stupid rattling sunroof!!

Here it is, I went out and did the job, I took pics for you all to see to help you on your way if you also decide to do this. Thank you to those of you who contributed information about how to do in the old thread. ~ Brett

Tools you will need:

1.) Phillipshead screw driver (flat tipped type works best)
2.) 10MM wrench, or socket (I'm using an extension for convenience you might wanna do that too.)

Steps you need to take:

Step 1 above pic:

1.) Open the sunroof 1/3 of the way. Unscrew the two small phillips screws on the front right and left, store them in a safe place. Gently pry the front edge of the sunroof liner off (plastic clips hold it, refer this photo to see what clips hold the panel in place.)

2.) Use your hand to gently slide between the panel or a thin pry bar and pop the inner clips loose.

3.) Sit in the car, grab the front of the panel on eithe side, and ease it forwards. Its just clamped in the back by a metal plate.. it will slide right out.

4.) Once it drops, you step out of the vehicle, and slide it out through the rear of the open sunroof.

5.) Next you will see the exposed 4 nuts on either side holding the sunroof panel onto the slider bracket. Remove those with your 10mm socket or hand wrench and store them in a safe place.

6.) Gently lift the panel off the vehicle from the exterior, and place it some where safe.

7.) You will see some exposed screws now which I have circled in red below. They may be quite lose, in my case... I did not loosen them up.. honest to god they were really that lose.. which caused air to get in, and lift on the highway.

8.) Align both of these brackets, and tighten those screws back down. (4 per side.)

9.) If there are height adjustment shims in there, please remove them and set them to the side some place safe for the moment.

9a.) You may wan to grease up the sunroof rails at this point since the panel is stil off the vehicle.. it would be a great idea.

10.) Go get your sunroof panel, and place the 8 studs back into the holes, then sit back inside the car.

11.) Get the 8 nuts you removed earlier and your 10mm wrench or socket and get your height adjustment shims.

12.) Gently lift the panel slightly up each side at a time, and slide your shims into place to they end up like this between the panel and the slider bracket:

13.) Tighten up the 8 nuts you removed earlier, snug them good, dont over tighten and break the studs.

14.) Go get your interior trim panel, and slide it towards the front, from the exterior underside of the open sunroof.

15.) Slide it far enough forward, to press it backwards into the clamp so it holds in place (reverse of how you removed it earlier.) Finesse it or you may damage the panel.

16.) Once that it in place, sit back in the vehicle, and use your hands to press all the clips back into place, gently.. as usual.

17.) Get the two phillips head screws you set aside earlier, and place them back into the front and left of the panel.. tighten but not over tight, or they will just keep spinning and never get tight again.

Close, then reopen your roof and go for a drive. See if the symptoms are gone.. they should be.

Hope this helps other people, and good luck with your sunroof.. I can't stress enoguh the importance of being gentle with it.. you dont want an ugly roof liner panel or any scratches on your car etc. ~ Brett

Very nice write up, thanks Brett. All I can saw when I saw this:

I think you got lucky you didn't loose your roof.

Wat do you mean clips? Are you talking about the gold metal shims that keep the sunroof aligned? Or do you mean the plastic push pin thingys? The photo of the underside of the roof lining from the bottom of the panel, shows all of the push pins in-place.

The gold metal shims, they are all different from the factory. They install how ever many is necessary to balance the sunroof out, and mine had 2 on each left side bracket, and 1 on each right side.. so it varis from car to car i guess?

hope that helps

oh man, that's insane! those screws are hella loose!... do you realize what coulda happened if your sunroof did fly off on the freeway! man, would be such a totally different, joke free thread

but, for that matter, nothing happened so thats pretty funny! man, I got stupid rattles in my sunroof too, and for the life of me, I can't find what's causing it... i totally dismanteled it, even the rails, tightened everything back down and nothing. boooooo

I dunno, just some Technical service bulletins out on sunroof rattles, May or may not help.. Trouble shooting in the prelude manuals basically says that stuff right there. Good luck though, I know its annoying as hell to try and enjoy a roof open day with it humming in your ear. ~ Brett

what do you mean by "align" the brackets? are there marks to align the brackets or do we have to do it ourselves by some other method?

Each hole in the plate that attatches the sunroof panel to the sliders, has wide holes in it. You could set them all the way forward or backward, I dont think theres any marks on there.. you just have to make sure they are both in a posotion (centered) really so, the roof closes correctly, and isnt installed crooked (it wont close, or it will break) youll see what I mean when you get to the screws, check out the pic above with the red circles (see the bracket can slide to the left or the right about 1/8 inch for adjustment.)

so basically as long as you have both in the same position you're fine? the sunroof (from the way it looks closed) doesnt look like it has much room for adjustment. but the brackets being centered is the ideal position?

Yup, sounds right, they dont allow much room for adjustment, but just make sure to keep both sides in the same position. (centered) should be the best, I do belive. ~ Brett

Arn't you afraid the screws might pop right back up? Maybe some locktite would be a good idea. Thanks for the real nice write-up!

I did this to mine and it took another 2.5 years for it to START rattling again. Its so easy, I didn't even mind too much. Just opened it back up and re-tightend everything.
