how to know when a clutch is bad....

I just was kinda wondering when you know that your clutch is going bad? I mean i have to lift my foot off the clutch pretty high (maybe between 60-75%) in order for it to engage. Is there some kind of trick to knowing? I heard of ppl saying it slips and this and that... but what is considered slipping? Im just looking for some tests/tips to know for sure

Thanks a lot

Well if its getting pushed out of gear, it might be your syncros and/or clutch. I knew my clutch was going b/c I was shifting perfectally and I was getting a grind on more occations. Its just something that you'll "know" or "feel" b/c it will be like: "what the **** is going on here"....sorry for the lack of explainable words..its been a long day thus far.

Well im really not grinding at all or anything of that sort... i dont have problems shifting... I sometimes have problems putting it into first when im at a light but apparently that is a Honda problem... the only thing that happens is my clutch squeeks rather loud sometimes when i push it in... and its not the slave cylinder or anything... its coming from the tranny, maybe the pressure plate? any advice?

Here's a good indication:

Worn down to the rivets .. thats what the groove is in the flywheel.

When I'd clutch in/out it made a sqeaking noise .. grinded some but mostly cuz i was lazy on the clutch.. I found I often had to push the pedal ALL the way down to the floor to get clean engagement in first a lot of times ..

When i'd engaged in 1st when it was cold, it would feel like it was skipping .. I heard people say "chattering" but I dont know if this applies ... imagine taking a crayon and holding only the end and pushing it down into paper, it'll kinda jump and skip and go .. du du du du du du du .. and leave a dotted line behind it, on an exagerated bouncing the car feeling thats what my clutch felt like .. it seemed ok when fully engaged but feathering it in 1st , forget it .. once I got going though it was ok ..

My bearings were also toast ..

Hope this helps you some (unknown mileage on the clutch, 125k miles on car)

Not really sure ... I mean .. really ifanything the flywheel/clutch are the only parts that will really be damaged, maybe the clutch arm .. but you dont want the shaft from the transmission getting wrecked at all ..

I had a clutch arm break on me one time and something broke off inside the transmission and messed it up all in the bellhousing ... that was on a GM though but something was wrecked to the point the tranny needed to be replaced because of the damage inside the bell housing.

wow. my car does that ... maybe i should look into it.

obviously, one day it simply no longer work, but is there any "severity" change to indicate immediate failure. ie: does the chatter get worse until it finally brakes, or does it stay the same and just snap one day?

if it's a squeak, try lubricating the springs in your pedal assembly first. If you want to see how bad it is, try testing for slippage (if you normally drive a speed in first gear, put it into 2nd or third and mash the gas, watch the tach move without the speedo).

if your clutch is bad, once u throw it in gear, and start moving, it will vibrate and knock and make the whole dash vibrate til you hit about 2500 rpm in 1st and 2nd. thats what happened to me. I took it out, ad it was broken in 3 pieces

when you have slipage problems or bad pedal feal ALWAYS check your clutch master cylinder reservor (sp?) if there isnt enough fluid then your not going to have enough pressue to operate your clutch properly, meaning you will have to give it more pedal to disingage. now if you shift into gear and your car ACTS like your not completely lifting the clutch pedal up and your clutch burns then its slipping. if its slipping then its likely your clutch is needing a change.. you can also smell it when you get out of the car, but the same smell can also be brakes so its a 2 and 2 together type thing

hehe im not awake yet so i hope this makes sense

Ok so let me ask you then, i have a squeaking noise coming from the inside of the tanny somewhere... my mechanic said it could be the pressure plate is weak... I checked and its not the slave cylinder thats squeaking... but i also heard a lot of ppl tell me that the squeak is normal and a lot of prelude owners have that... Does my mechanic know what he's saying?

i've been trying to search for this because my tranny just started to act up.....i can press my clutch in and it will be okay till i get to the very bottom and i will hear a wierd noise....if i barely let off then the sound is gone.....i don't think i'm slipping and if my cylinder was leaking wouldn't it leak inside the cabin? hope to get all this fixed soon because i want a realible car......
