You need to remove the shift boot, which means you need to remove the center console.

There are plastic tabs on the knob that connect it to the shift boot/metal ring. Unscrew the shift boot from the console and pull the boot up. You should see the tabs.

Does this make any sense?

jpprelude is right about the tabs that hold the metal ring to the shift knob, but it sounds like you are replacing the stock shift knob with an aftermarket one.

You really don't have to take off the shift boot to do this. Simply grab a hold of the shift boot with two hands and pull the boot down towards the console in a vertical motion (pull hard). This will separate the metal ring and boot from the shift knob. To remove the shift knob, unscrew the whole knob counter-clockwise.

Should you need to remove the metal ring from the boot as well, you will see a rubber band near the inside of the metal ring. The leather boot wraps around the inside of the metal ring and is held together with a rubber band. Remove the rubber band and the metal ring can be removed from the boot.

Oh yeah, save him a lot of work

If you do take out the center console, be careful, it is thin and cheap. Mine broke right where the shift boot is, at it's thinnest point.

that is cheap plastic

I broke my console as well. I've taken it off so many times, but the last time I forgot to put the shifter into reverse and that thin piece got caught and broke. It was a clean break so you can't even tell. It doesn't bother me that much to replace it so it will stay like that for now.
