How do you properly break in pads/rotors

Well I bought new pads/rotors in Aug 05. Specifially brembo blanks and axxis metal masters(the middle grade ones). After 3 months they were warped pretty bad. Now i just got the rotors cut and grinded and I don't want to drive the car until I know exactly how i should break in the rotors. I've read that your suppose to do a series of 10 hard stops from 60-5mph allowing cooling time in between. However, my mechanic laughed when i brought them up and said that will warp the hell out of them. He said no hard stops and to be gentile with them for a few days. I don't know what to do???

I've never had a problem with doing the 10 hard stops. You'll be alright if you just be gentle with them for a little while.

Ya, you probably had a buildup of cementite, not warped rotors. With axxis ultimates you're supposed to break them in with 10 hard stops but I'm not sure what they recommend for the MM. It's likely to be similar. What's very important though, is that when you break them in, you don't come to a complete stop and you don't let the pads sit on the rotor for very long, that's when you'll get uneven pad transfer. Get up to 60, do a hard brake to 5, then drive for a mile or so and repeat. Then drive home and cruise to a stop and turn it off and let them cool fully. If you get more buildup in the future, I'd try repeating the hard stopping again - sometimes it'll scrap a bit of the cementite off.

I recieved these instruction for my Brake Pads...

Hawk Brake Bedding-in Procedure
Step 1:
Make 6-10 slow-downs from approximately 30-35 mph to 5 mph. applying moderate pressure. Do not come to a complete stop.
Step 2:
Make an additional 2 to 3 harder stops from approximately 40-45 mph. to zero.
Step 3:
DO NOT DRAG THE BRAKES! (after stopping - do not leave your foot on the brake pedal)
Step 4:
Allow 15 mintues or more for the brake system to cool down.
Step 5:
Your new Hawk pads are ready for use.

very interesting.... the avg person would never do this though? Initially i was pretty careful with the pads, being very gentile. I guess I should try another method this time around. Although, the pads are not new... I guess its mainly for the rotors though.

Follow the directions on the brake pads because each manufacturer probably has their own way of doing things.
