how do i reset my ecu and will it cause any damage

I'm not sure how the 5th genners do it without resetting the radio and clock. But you reset it either by pulling the negative from the battery for about 10 seconds or pull the 10A Clock/Radio fuse under the hood for about 10 seconds.
