How Do I get the taillights apart?!!

I got some aftermarket taillight and I need to get them apart to modify them, Whats the best way to get them apart? Ive heard cooking them in an oven, how exactly do you do this with out melting them? The adhesive is gray in color if that helps.

Thanks

put them in the oven, preheat at around the lowest temp. put them in for around 5 min at a time, then pry them apart. Thats what I did.

Caz, no offence to this at all...but I read this and was like what?! he can get a JRSC to fit on his 4th gen, but pulling apart tails...hehe.

Ya I know, I thought about that before I made the post, lol but I was feeling lazy and didnt want to mess around with release agents and all the other BS so I thought I would just see how everyone else got theirs apart. Did you put them on a cookie sheet or anything? I just thought they would melt sitting on the rack?

I just used a heat gun as well. It was a slow methodical process.

lol, my roomates would crap their pants if they opened the oven door and found taillights in there. I should leave my camcorder out for entertainment purposes.

funny, i just took my stock tails apart last night to modify them as well. Used a blowdryer...about 35 mins for each if you use one, just go slow and don't pry on the outer (most visible) edge of the light with a screwdriver, so you don't risk chipping the red lens.

I used the oven on about 250 or something. I set them on a cookie sheet that had a towel on it.

I've yet to put them back together (2 sets)

In an oven it only takes them about two minutes to heat up, right?

Put em together the same way. Heat em back up and push them togther. The adhesive should go back together, at least they did with my headlights.

Search for the 5th gen write up on black housing headlights for good instructions on seperation and putting them back together. Same concept for tailights.
