How difficult is it to install a shift light?

I'd really like to put one in, don't want the honkin' 10" tach....just the light. I assume it could only be a couple of wires...
Easy?Medium?Difficult?

Same thing with me, all i wanted was the shift light, not some huge gaudy tachometer sitting on the dash when the car has a factory tach that does just fine. I bought one of the proform adjustable shift lights for $45 and installation required hooking up only 3 wires (positive, negative, and tach lead). Making it look clean (running the wires and screwing it into the steering column) took longer than the actual wiring.

Where did you get the shift light?

Thanks,

You can go to http://www.proformtachs.com/flash/base.html to see the shift light, click on the buy now to get it. I would say the lense is about the size of a quarter, the whole thing is about 4" long and you can just twist a dial to set the shift point, but get some sort of cover for use at night, this thing is damn bright!!

The tach lead is a blue wire with a cap on the end of it that isn't connected to anything. It is located in a cluster of wires on the passenger side strut tower, do a search, i think somebody posted a picture of this before.

By the way, I had to buy some extra wire to make it all the way to the tach lead wire. You may be able to make it by drilling through the firewall, but that is just asking for trouble, i ran the wire through the door.

I thought maybe you used a wire from the ecu or behind the speedo or something. You could have gone through the firewall using that empty grommet under the fuse box.

PreludesR4Speed, Where did you mount the shift light? Also, it looks like from the pics that the adjusting dial is behind the shift light? How accurate is it? Seems very tempting considering MSD and Autometer are more expensive and you need the modules.

i mounted it on the steering column, it doesn't interfere with the view of the tach or speedometer at all. The adjusting dial is behind the shiftlight, and it seems to be very accurate. It helps if you have really quick reflexes for the 1-2 shift because by the time it flashes you split seconds away from fuel cut, but the higher the gear you are in the longer you have to react after the flash of course. I bought this one because as you mentioned you don't have to buy pills to insert for different shift points, just twist the dial.
