Hood damper write-up

While combing through the internet, I have not found 1 person who has successfully jimmy rigged some Hood dampers that actually sat FLUSH with the fender of a 4th gen prelude, most likely this is because most 4th gen owners are broke as mofos, and that's why they don't have a 5th gen, granted at the time I purchased my car I was also broke. So I took it among myself to get the job done!

Parts used:

ebay prelude hood damper hinge adapters only(The whole kit did not fit, the struts were too thick to fit in the rain gutter)

Tein RSX hood dampers (the hinge adapters will not fit, you should probably get a set of civic or integra dampers and relocated the fender bolt even further up to make them fit)

2 misc nuts

2 misc washers

First off I had to trim some my carbon fiber hood off to fit these ghetto ebay hinge mounts on, I also had to use slightly longer hood bolts due to the extra plate making the hinge thicker. I also slapped a big washer on there cuz, I think it helps it hold together better. Now take note, I wasted alotta money $85 on the ghetto ebay dampers that included these hinge adapters, but I'm pretty sure you can slice and dice the RSX adapters to fit nicely into our preludes

Second of all, I had to relocate the fender bolt so that it was more outward towards the fender so it wouldn't hit my hood when I tried to close it. Now to do this you need to drill a hole just through the thin metal piece that holds up the fender, stick the nut on the other side and screw it down, u will now notice that the ball thingy sticks up too high. You are going to take the bolt out and trim a few threads off the bottom of the bolt so it sits lower. The end result should look like this, I would recommend drilling the hole closer up to the original bolt because as of now, my hood opens up TOO much and I have to get on my tippy toes to reach it to close, but I for one am not gonna drill another hole in my fender to fix this, im fine as is :

Welp thats it for the small modifications I had to do to get these to fit, now alls you got to do is pop the dampers in and marvel at your accomplishments.

Now for the money shots:

Wowzers, my hood actually closes ALL THE WAY, moohahhaha! No ghetto fender gap for me sirs!

here's a far shot, notice how high the hood opens, if you are 6 ft tall then u can relocate the fender bolt where I did, for you shorter people, relocated it closer to the original bolt.

And this last shot is merely showing off my sweet new engine bay, I added some stuff too it like Neuspeed Strut bar, NGK blue spark plugs, DC sports oil cap, Type R valve cover, and a carbon fiber spark plug cover, and last but certaintly not least Mugen Reservoir socks(+30whp! or at least it should, thats how much each sock friggin cost me !)

Oh and also, I am quite confident these will work for stock hoods too, the RSX dampers are friggin strong, maybe too strong, I have to struggle a bit to begin closing the hood, or maybe its because I relocated the fender bolt too high. If you use civic or integra dampers, you may have a smoother operating system by relocating the fender bolt way up.

I would like to thank the following people for giving me ideas and confidence to make this work:

Thread

edge2lyfe on preludezone.com (he came up with the idea of relocating the fender bolt he didn't have to trim the bolt on the 5th gen, but you will have to trim it on the 4th gen)Thread

Samurhai on preludepower.com I didn't even know hood dampers existed until I saw his car in real life Thread

I thought about doing this, but still the ball joints stick out way too much not letting the hood close. So i just used the mounts I got from the ebay dampers I bought earlier and unsuccessfully installed.

Thanks, if you relocate that fender bolt, you may be able to fully close your hood like me . This is assuming the piston is thin enough to fit in the rain gutter, I have some other pistons that are wrapped in carbon fiber, and they are too fat too fit in the gutter. Tein however is a perfect fit with room to spare!

^yup mine are too thick to fit, but I am running spacers on the hood hinges so that solved the problem...=P

Also, keep the joints clean cuz they might rust...

I wouldn't say your problem was fixed. More like worked around. get some teins and spray paint them black. from the looks of my cf dampers, the only reason they are so thick is because they are wrapped in carbon fiber just for looks, if you peel that useless carbon fiber off, it looks like they may fit.

you are probably correct, but i like the CF.... it goes with my CF hood and mirrors... however, even without the spacers, the "bump" wasn't that bad...i am just picky like that, so it bothered me....

I saw this on honda-tech as well.. so far no reply from you for help.

Hey tony! Pretty dope job you did on the dampers. I have some issues I hope you can address. I bought some ebay cf carbon fiber dampers. The issue is that the dampers are WAY too stiff. When I installed them my hood was flexing and I couldnt get myself leave it on.

Will the RSX dampers work without relocating the stock fender bolt mounting point? Thanks

I'm pretty sure it will still work. Does your hood close perfectly without any fender gap? I don't see how the hood can close properly without relocating the fender bolt, don't be scared, it took me 15 minutes to do the first side, then another 5 to do the other since I already knew exactly what to do

Well I was able install both sides but I felt that the dampers were too stiff and I couldnt close the hood. When I tried the hood would flex and it was making some cracking sounds. I guess Ill get someone help to close it next time.

yeah same thing happend to me, those hoes are stiff, and it specifically says on the directions "Do not use with Lightened hood, Carbon fiber etc" I say screw dampers and get the rsx ones.

I found out about the disclaimer a little too late. =( Looks like I will have to fork over the money for brand new teins. (>.<)
