in my opinion, the axle is much easier to change as a whole piece that just the boot.

Here's axles:
Prelude Honda 1995 Axle Assembly - AutoPartsWarehouse.com

Anywhere from $60-$90 (i'd do the $90 one because they are brand new and you dont have to send them any cores).

BTW, these are called axles, not half-shafts.

Some tips:
Rent the big socket from Auto Zone, I think its a 36mm.

Get a pry bar to pop the axle out of the tranny.

Knock the the new axle in with a rubber mallet untp you feel/hear the ring lock pop into place.

Good luck.

Like i said cv halfshaft.. Price depends on what side and auto or manual, It was 115 with like 50 back for the core at auto zone so it came to like 65 dollars i had to pay to fix mine. It was the right side the passenger side. Yeah it runs from the tranny to the knuckles.. Ne way it was my outer boot that was torn let grease out and road dirt in and it was worn its not much and it is pretty easy to do.. oh left side is like 147 with 30 back but like i said prices are different depending on auto or manual and what side..

yes it is a 36mm..

If the CV boot is torn open, buy a remanufactured halfshaft axle and replace the whole halfshaft (includes the joint).

OH its actually Constant Velocity (CV) drive axle

your right it is the driveaxle but it comes in a whole assembly. You can say it either way its like how some people call a cable reel a clockspring.. its all the same thing BASICALLY if you ask for a cv halfshaft for a 92-96 prelude at anyparts store they are not gonna go call it DRIVEAXLE AHHHHH they know what your talking about lol

is it the right or left side?? well here is what i had to do..

First, remove the wheel cover and loosen the 36mm nut holding the joint to the bearing. Then raise the vehicle and remove the lower ball joint from the lower control arm and the knuckle. If your working on the passenger side, drain the transmission. Slide the half shaft out of the knuckle then use a prybar and pry the inboard end of the shaft out of the transmission or intermediate shaft, which ever should apply. Be careful not to damage the seal in the transmission. Installing the shaft is the reverse of removal. The inboard side of the shaft should snap right back into the intermediate shaft and transmission by means of a snap ring on the end of the shaft.

yes, it's okay. I replaced my drivers side 3 months ago, then a month ago I noticed my passenger side was torn as well and replaced it a few weeks ago.

BTW, I got mine from carquest. The passenger side was $50 after a $50 core charge, and the drivers was a little more at $60.00 after a $50 core charge. They came with a lifetime warranty. I'm not sure if other places offer lifetime warranties but at $50-60 after a core charge and not having to ship the core back by simply dropping it off at car quest after doing the job, it's a pretty sweet deal.

Also, use genuine Honda Transmission fluid from the dealership.

np, BTW I'm from Elgin, IL. Noticed it says you're from Chicago.

For anyone mechanically inclined, i'd rate it at a 2.5-3/10. As long as you have a buddy helping you and you have the tools ( the socket and a pitch fork, joint seperating tool, both can be rented from advanced auto parts) each axle takes about 1.5-2 hours. Everyone runs through problems that take time like not being able to use a rachet on some bolts so you have to take your sweet time lossening them with a wrench.

I just have a 2 car garage to work in, not a shop.

This one is good for technical help, but for meets, local mechanics and local help, CPC is good.

A shop will charge you for 2 hours worth of labor per axle and about 150 per axle. So, around 500 with tax for both axles?
Midas quoted me over the phone at 220 and 2 hrs of labor for one axle. And Tires plus wanted 240 with 1.5 hrs of labor ( according to the book that's how long it takes). Prices didn't include taxes, so add another 15 and multiply by 2 if you're getting both done. I don't see the point in paying 500 dollars for both, when you can replace them both for like 150.
