I have a 93 si with 108,800 miles. The car is in excellent shape. But my h23 is pretty messed up. I got a few different opinions and they were all bad news. One guy said i running with a broken crank, the other said theres something going on in my Head. The engine shakes like crazy when you rev it up. all types of noises are coming out of it. I just want some opinions or advice on what to do. Should i fix this engine or get another h23 or better yet h22. I just want to make my car reliable so i can get to school and work. Any advice would be great.
Deciding whether to do a swap or fix your current engine really depends on how much damage there actually is. First, assess the amount of damage you have and the cost to fix it, then decide what would be a better choice (rebuild/swap) financially. If you do a swap, H22 all the way.

i love when sites don't work cause i spelled something wrong...
if you want an honest opinion.. a rebuild isn't practical...
when i blew my motor on my 92 si (con -rod to cement, holes in block) i bought a used h23 to re-build.. when i took it all apart.. i found that the head was fine but the block needed to be bored out... right there you looking at new rings, pistons, all the bearings and if you need the crank then a crank.. not only that but you gotta get everything machined and machining cost $$$
i decided to go with an f22b.. the lil bro of the h23 because everybody told me it was a simple drop in swap.. i've come to find out that it wasn't as drop in as i thought.. there's a lot of modifying that needs to be done.. the knock sensor isn't part of the block so you have to modify it to have one, there's no oil cooler and so you need to use there coolant pipe on the back and the thermostat is a really tight fit. you will also need to change the upper radiator hose input on the head to acomidate a ect sensor.
if i could go back.. i think i would try and pick up a used h23.. unless you're having a shop do the f22b swap.. which a lot have done
i decided to go with the f22b because the cost of getting one was around 700.. i think the h22 was running 1200-1400
but don't bother with the build.. tell the shop to price you out a swap and take it from there.. price out the h22 and the h23 and the f22b
i think how much $$$ will determine the outcome of this situation
and if you need an estimate of cost.. just whatever they quote you.. times that by 1.5
cause that's how much you'll be spending in the end..
word of advice.. make sure you change all the heater hoses while you're doing the swap.. also a timing belt/water pump/tensioner are recomended
the heater hoses are going to be special order from honda and so you can order them from hondaautomotiveparts.com.. they have the cheapest price
if you have any other questions.. hit me up on aim at tenzola
the best thing to do is what i did. i couldn't buy an h22 cause of the money and i didn't want a high mileage used h23 so i got a JDM f22b. it's just liek the h23 so no pwer lost and it's a jdm motor hmotorsports has them for 550 and tell them that you got this info form po.com and talk to steve and he should toss a jdm ecu too. shippin is about 200. so for 750 you get a almost new motor. just my 0.02
