Hello - my 92 with uncertain future

Howdy all - Yes my first post - no not a troll or spamer

I have my sister's 92 prelude, long story short, I set my buddy up with it as his kid needed a car. In less than a year, the kid toasted the motor (Oil pump failure)

Now I am a shop teacher and have enough projects, I got ahold of this car because I planned to swap the seats into a Jeep project but that is another story. The megga nut case sterio is definatly comming out regardless

In our area (Glens Falls, NY) we have searched for an affordable way to save this car, but my buddy can't swing the more than 2k plus install cost - also, there really arn't any available engines (read affordable) according to the mechanic.

Was thinking of parting it out and doing an ebay job on it but as I said, I have enough projects, so I an thinking of posting it as a blown engine, no seats parts car unless there are options I havn't though of.

when ya try to start it, it makes a horrable knocking sound as if a connecting rod is snapped

Looking for suggestions as it is a beauty and since I can not post pics yet, here is a link to Photobucket, there are some jeep photos there - but did a round about with the camera to give a good idea, couple dings, nothing big. Man it would be sweet to save her and if it were a matter of plulling the moter and dropping in new bearings I would consider it as I have the ability to do stuff like that.

And for what its worth, here is a link to my jeep build, a 64 cj5 I plan to give to my kid (she is 13) when she is 16

Molsen" Jeep build

note Edit - Photobucket link is now operable

you can get a motor from ebay for <$1,000 - the swap is easy and doable in a weekend. Good luck!

only motors I have seen start at 1300.00 - free shipping thou - I have built an entire jeep for less than a grand

I really do not need another car and my buddy can't swing the cost, nor is he willing to dump another load of cash into it and then have his kid trash it again. In his words - do what ever ya want - Just a shame thou, he really liked the car.

So I am guessing by reading a buncha threads that at a bare min, if I were to pull the engine and look, I would find spun bearings and a toasted crank that would be unuseable in a rebuild. Hard to believe that a spun bearing would make that kinda noise, it sounds worse

abs brakes to answer the one question, the chop job got put on hold as I have someone looking at the car as is.

I did find a motor with a 5 speed for $800 localy with 50 k miles on it, the folks interested in it would like to know how big a deal it is to do the motor and trannie swap?

I have read, it could be done in a day, 2 days easy - what he asked me, since he knows his way with a wrench, was does this drop out the bottom?

might be saving this one after all!

^^^+1

Don't listen to the mechanic, engines can be found fairly cheaply now. It's a 92, so it's going to be a H23A1 that you're looking for, which is a lot cheaper than an H22A1. If it's a F22A, it's even cheaper. The swap can be done in a full day, or a weekend, if you want to take your time.

it will "work" but you will not be impressed with it. you will also have to get new motor mounts for it...I think

Not looking to be overly impressed, looking to make it run. The motor trannie is siting in a repair shop of someone I know. It is of no use to him. I have this car in need of a motor, I need seats for my jeep and was looking for extra dough.

the though was to drop in that motor if it is doable with out it being to much of a PITA and sell the car outright for more than as is with a baked motor, split the proceeds and be happy.

Otherwise, she gets chopped, then i get to deal with listing part after part, in the end, I would probabley make out better chopping it.

You mentioned new motormounts - would those be bolt in or would the need to be welded in - bolt on I would consider, but I am not going to weld, then sell - I may be good, but not that good

No, it wont work. You would have to custom fab some motor mounts for the thing and you'd end up with a car that runs so weak that you'd wonder what's wrong with it.
