having problems w/ auto trans

i am in the middle of changing out my trans and this is what my problem is

when i bolt everything together, (engine, torque converter, trans) i can't seem to turn the engine over, when i loosen all the bolts from the trans goign to the engine.. giving it like a 1/4 inch of play, the engine can rotate and doesn't feel siezed... after much deliberation.. the only solution that i could come up with is that the input shaft of the auto trans is bent preventing it from seating all the way into the torque converter.. therefor squishing it onto the engine and causing it not to be able to turn

my question is.. is this possible... like for the input shaft to be bent from delivery or improper removal?... is there anything else i should be checking for before i buy another trans?

thanks all for you help

john

turn the engine over by hand, or the starter won't turn the engine over?
