I was wondering if this has happen to anyone else. Or is this just plain unusual? Lucky even? So the story goes...
On the highway heading home after cruising around town and hanging out with friends the unexpected happens. It was as if I ran over a large rock in the middle of the road, only there was no rock. It came from the engine bay and flew out from under the car. The battery light immediately went off on the dashboard. I then put it in neutral, revved it a little to see if the engine was still running. I was freaking out at this point, like WTF!!! While trying to pull over I noticed I had lost the power steering.
Pulled over on the side of the road I popped the hood and found the P/S belt sticking up and off the P/S pump. The alternator belt was also off the alternator and compressor, dangling under the car. Though both belts were fine, in need of replacing, but neither had snapped.
Upon further inspecting I found the crankshaft pulley gone! Just went AWOL. My first thought was, "How in the world!?!?" More inspecting showed that the bolt holding the pulley in had just broken off. My friend (who I was following) told me I was lucky the whole bolt didn't come out, and that my timing belt was still fine.
So the car was drivable, just no A/C, no P/S, and no Radio. It was a slow, silent, and slightly warm drive home where my Prelude now sits, waiting to get its new, long needed "heart".
Pictures were taken the next day. Take a look at the damage yourself. Also, feel free to post any crazy stories about how your car left you on the side of the road.

I've owned two Preludes thus far in my life. First one was a 99 base model with the ****ty SS auto in it. After various mechanical issues, I got my type SH and the base model sat around for months, not being driven. So one day me and a good friend take both of them out and we decide to have a race (we both know the SH will destroy the automatic, but it's all in good fun).
We do the usual, downshift then honk 3 times. Except I didn't downshift to give the automatic and advantage. It took forever to wind up and when it finally started pulling away I saw a huge plume of white smoke that was quickly followed by black smoke. Watching from behind, my heart sank. I thought the Prelude was done. I called my friend and he said the interior was full of smoke and he couldn't breath and we managed to limp the car all the way home and that's where it sat until the day I sold it. A couple of weeks later, I test drove it and it did fine except it would smoke really bad when I floored it. Like leaving obnoxious amounts of smoke, and people would honk at me lol. I told the buyer the tranny had been freshly rebuilt (which it had) and to be easy on it for 1,000 more miles before he could drive hard. Just to make sure he was long gone before anything bad happened. O.o
And to keep from taking up too much space, I'll briefly summarize the SH's issue. I downshifted to pass some semi-trucks on the highway, the traffic was heavy so I wasn't keeping a super close eye on the tach, hit the rev limiter at 90mph, heard a loud boom and my car lost all power. Clutch exploded xD
2 things could have caused this, the pulley bolt was loose and the wobbling of the pulley snapped the bolt or the other which is far more likely, the pulley started to come apart and the vibrations from it broke the bolt.

Nvroutgund, I know how it feels seeing white smoke coming from your car. I hate it. The main reason why I now need a swap. And now this happens, talk about insult to injury.

Do you think a torn rubber insert in the front engine mount could have contributed to the bolt snapping or the pulley coming apart?
I could. Unfortunately I don't have the time nor the money to rebuild right now. Eventually I will want to rebuilt for a good turbo setup, but that'll be a couple years from now.
that happened in my crx! haha i thought i had a rod knock because the crank pulley was still halfway on hitting that bar the goes from the axel to the subframe scarred the **** out of me haha

Story time...
OP: you can extract the bolt, get a good bolt and balancer pulley at a salvage yard. Shouldn't run you more than $100 for everything.

My friend and previous owner of my first prelude (red 92 s 5 speed) the balancer separated and my friend was all confused, couldn't figure where all the groves went! Drove home on the battery, and we used one off a 96 accord lx I had.
