Has anyone tried the "shortened shifter" trick?

i was browsing around and located the shifter shortening "trick". is this trick worth doing? has anyone done this? it seemed like it would be okay. in case someone don't know what im talking about. its when you run the threads on the shifter down further and cut off about an inch or so from the shifter lever. what do you think?

haven't done it, but im positive it works. all the "short shifters" are is just that, a stock shifter cut down and narrowed out towards the top. im plan on doing that in the spring here on campus at the machine shop.

i believe the idea behind short shifters is to change the distance from the pivot point to the connecting point of the shift linkage/cable giving a shorter throw with the same length shifter rod. correct me if im not correct.

you are right but i am referring to is when you take length off of the shift lever itself. not just installing a short shift adapter. i read about this trick on the ntpog site.

If you want it the lever to be shorter then just follow the instructions on the NTPOG site, but it will do absolutely nothing for the length of the shift throw. Dont trust those adapters... they are cheap hunks of aluminum.

Just make the good investment and get a 4bidden SS. Best shifter on the market

making your shift lever shorter alone (not moving the fulcrum) makes no sense. You are giving yourself less of a mechanical advantage. Don't do it, buy a forbidden, they are great.

I actually had another request for that color, can you believe it?

BTW, if anyone wants a "PO Special" custom color shifter, let me know. I have 2 unpowdercoated right now that I am willing to get custom done for about $8 more than the normal price. That'll just cover my gas to HPC Coatings 2 times.

okay i would love to get one of those shifters, if anyone wants to help me out and donate money to the "i want a short shifter fund"
that would be great. let me know if you need my paypal address. i already have a dc sports short shift adapter. it may be cheap but its all i could afford. plus those 4bidden shifters weren't out yet. it has held up fine. i was asking about shortening the shifter rod because i can do that for free. so if it worked at all then i could do it.

i still say go do it yourself like on ntpog. dropping the height will shorten your throws. if that is what you want and dont have the kind of cash for short shifters or adapters then that will suffice

It will make a difference. Of course getting a short shifter is better but if you essentially lower where the knob is placed on the lever it is closer to the pivot thus it won't have to move as far.

shorter throw x2, just make sure the adapter isn't too close to the top if you cut it down, just seems like that wouldn't be so good

If you get a 4bidden SS, dont expect the knob to be any lower, I dont think mine is any, maybe just a little...dont waste your time cutting down the stock lever, just get a 4bidden and you'll fall in love.

like he said, he wants a 4bidden shifter but he doesnt have the money. i say just go for it and cut the thread a little more and cut off a bit of the top and tell us how you like it. i think it will make it harder to shift but try!

i wonder how short it would be with a neuspeed short shift adapter and the forbidden ss! damn, i wish i tried that when i used to have my neuspeed ss adapter. anyone try it?

I cut my shifter (left about .25 of an inch of thread so I can put my stock knob on if I have to).

I also have the DC adapter and I love the combo. It shifts very crisp and clean.

No complaints here.
