H23/H22 Ferrea roller follower. Has anyone done this set up???

I feel that this should belong it the 4th Gen topic, because I'm going to talk about the H23/H22 hybrid again. I know, I know, this has been discussed a million times over, but here I go. I have been keeping this to myself for about 2 years or so now, since it took me about that much time to find a pretty cheap H22 head. Now, I want to hear everyone's opinion, before I go ahead with this hybrid. The real reason that I bought the H22 head for my H23 is that I wanted to put Ferrea's roller followers with Crane's camshafts for turbo application, well because I want to turbo it. Since the roller followers eliminates the VTEC, and the H23 is not VTEC anyway, I am guessing that it will be a perfect mate. I am wondering if anyone has done this set up already??? What should I expect??? I was thinking of just putting the stock VTEC camshafts instead of the Crane cams and grind the two side lobes and use the VTEC lobe all the time. I want to hear everones opinion on this, even from those who has 5th Gen Lude, especially TurboH22, hehehe, he has helped me a lot in the past. So, do I have everyones attention??? Let's find out. Damn, even now I'm hesitant to post this!!!

Why would you put the VTEC head onto the H23 if you are going to eliminate VTEC? Wouldn't it make more sense to use the H23 head and work with that?

Maybe I am not getting what you are planning on doing but it sounds like you are overcomplicating the process.

I agree with Zimmlude,

The H22 head flows better than the H23 in stock form, but with a port and polish you'd be just as good.

If you were to stay on the vtec grind at all times it would take a LONG time or ALOT of power to get into the power band. This would be a Race only platform in that form. For street I would
use the H22 head on the H23, but instead of messing with the Ferrea rollers just use SS valves/Titanium Retainers/Dual Valve springs. Crower makes turbo cams for the H22 also. Then get forged pistons/sleeve the block and balance the entire bottom end. Throw whatever turbo application your'e going with and enjoy the final product.

I think you would be the first to do the H23 hybrid and make it a serious turbo motor

Goodluck

Thanks for your comments guys. But being the stubborn ape that I am, I feel like going ahead do this set up. With this set up, there should be less drag on the valve terrain, so supposedly more HP and Torque. Also higher RPM range, so maybe I'll be able to rev the H23 to 8K easy. If I mess up, oh well, that's my fault, and it'll be a lot of money wasted. But if it comes out pretty good, I'll post a dyno of it. Oh, and by the way, I'm gonna go with the Crane cam instead of using the stock H22 cams and using the VTEC lobes. I checked with a friend of mine and we compared the duration and lift to the Gude cams, and they're close to being identical. So that means, that I should idle OK!!!

i would upgrade your valve springs and retainers for the higher rpms. and also for more continuous high lift.

I just wasted my money on an H23/22 hybrid. It wasnt really worth it because i didnt build up my bottom end. Now after about 2500 miles it spun 3 of the main crankshaft bearings. I was pretty dumb to not build the bottom end after having 120k on it, but i took my chances and lost. Now i am on the search for an H22, but i have the perfect oppurtunity to build this hybrid for a turbo. It just might take me a while.
Just whatever you do, make sure you build you bottom end!!

revving to 8k with a stock bottom end of H23 ?? .. well, even if you hype it up with sleeves forged rods/pistons ...

Read the N/A posts about hwo Satan_SRV fu(ked his engine.. the crank will NOT go for much at high rpms. Its the leading cause of the blown bottom end in the hybrid setup .. if your going to be doing a turbo application i dunno .. I wouldn't take it past 7500rpm ...

It could work, you'd be a first ... so do it and let us all learn from somebody willing to take a risk

Thanks to all that replied, supporters or not. I will come back to this post whenever I finish with this set up. It might take a while because I had just sent my block to get it iron sleeved, but the shops backed up on lots of work. They said that they might not finish my block or even see it for 4-6 months. No other shop is reliable enough to do the work around here. So I'm just going to have to wait. But in the mean time, I will work on my cylinder head and put it all together. I should probably get the Hondata S200 ECU and intake manifold heatshield now, since I'm there's not much I can do for now. I can use that ECU for my F22A1 right??? I should also replace my radiator to either Fluidyne or Koyo. Opps, I'm getting all side tracked, well I've rambled long enough. Well, see you in the future!!!
