Half Shafts

I need to replace the half shafts and it is confusing and I don't understand how to get the old ones off and install the new shafts

now when you say shafts, i thought there was only 1. Are you talking about the axles?

^ There's two, isn't there? Passenger and drivers side Half shaft?
Each shaft has two CV boots on it to protect the joints.

funny thing is I'm actually in the process of doing my passenger one. Probably tomorrow or the next day. Not sure if I'll do it myself or go somewhere. The outer CV boot is completely torn and leaked tons of grease in the past few months and is now clicking badly when turning right. I'm just going to replace the entire passenger side half shaft instead of replacing just the boot.

^those are axles.

1. Loosen 36mm axle nut (or 32mm I forget)
2. Jack up the car
3. Remove wheel, caliper, rotor (I actually think you don't have to remove the rotor but oh well)
4. remove cotter pin / castle nut under shock assembly
5. you should be able to remove the axle at this point by playing with the assembly

reinstall is exact opposite.

and if you ARE talking about the 1/2 shaft (no 's') it should be pretty easy to take off after you get the axles out. If i'm not mistaken, it's 4-14mm bolts.

The intermediate shaft = half shaft??? I've never heard it called a half shaft but I'm assuming that is what this is.

I believe its 3-14 mm bolts. You want to put these bolts back at the same spot b/c one of them I believe is shorter than the rest of the 2.

Sometimes, its hard to detatch the driveshaft (#2 from the picture) from the half shaft. If that happens to you, what many people (and what I did) was take a straight tip pry bar and put it half of the tip on the bottom edge of the driveshaft, and hit it w/ a hammer. It takes a few blows, but eventually you push the driveshaft out from the halfshaft.

+1 on it being difficult to remove from the half shaft / intermediate shaft.

As for removing the calipers and rotors, I've changed mine out without doing so. Don't think its really necessary

A quick and easy search for "axles replacement" brought up this topic: CV Axle Replacement

Within the topic is a link to a pdf of the service manual for the procedure.
