H23A VTEC Questions

Hey guys,

I wanted some feed back about this.

I have ben thinking about the JDM H22 swap for a while and the only sticking point for me is that I value my lowend torque. I see that Osaka motors is selling the H23A VTEC for a very good price and I am interested now. I do have a couple of questions though.

How hard would it be to convert this engine to OBD-I? Would putting my old H23 distributor on it be the only thing I would really need to do? What about the ECU? Would it work to take a P13 and have the H23A VTEC's fuel maps and ignition maps cloned onto it?

IF I did this I would prolly get a long block and either find an H22 tranny with LSD or put a quaife in my tranny.

Just wanted some input from the group.

Thanks,
J

You would only change the distributor to allow you to adjust the timing...but even then you would have to run the wire from the CKP sensor back up to your dist.

To convert to OBDI assuming you have an OBDI car is nothing. You just run your OBDI ecu and you're done. The wire harness should work fine, if not have an H22a wire harness handy.

You can't clone anything onto a P13. Unless you have tectom tools. You could run the p13 and it would be fine...preludes run rich anyway...check into the injector size and do some math.

Osaka will give you an H22a tranny with that engine, just no ecu.

Hey,

Thanks for the input.

What I meant by clone is have the ECU sent off and chipped by someone so that the maps would be perfectly stock.

The reason I ask about the distributor is that appears to be the only major difference between OBD-II and I engines. The sensors being in there instead of on the block.

Do you know much about Osaka? They seem to have excellent prices. Have you dealt with them? $1900 for an H23A VTEC is a very tempting idea but shipping might get me.

Thanks again,
J

Osaka is going to hand deliver my motor next week, hehe they're only 5-6 from Toronto...

THe distributor is different but that doesn't matter. You can run an OBDII distributor on the engine because the CKP is on the crank....it will still send the correct CKP signal to an OBDI ecu...

It only matter if you want to be able to turn the distributor. THe main reason people change distributors and use USDM engine harnesses is to avaid dealing with the JDM internal coil distributors.

Who are you going to send your ecu off to be chipped? I know very few people that chip P13s, and where are they going to get the H23a specs?

I honestly haven't researched the chipping yet. It may in fact not be possible.

About the harness, I am assuming the one that comes with the H23A will be for RHD and out of an auto so it is good for parts only. Then it would make sense to use my H23 distributor as I would end up using the H23 harness as well so the wires for the CKP sensor will be at the distributor anyways. I do value the external coil too as I have and MSD system.

As for parts for the H23A I am assuming that all stuff made for the H22 will bolt up as the only difference is the stroke on the engine correct?

Sorry for all the questions but there is really not much info about this engine on the web.

I appreciate your help,

J
