H23 shift points when racing

when im at the strip i shift at about 6800 RPM in my 1993 Si. I know this sounds horrible that i rev my H23 this high but it feels like the car is still pulling until about 7K. Anyone else shift at 6800 RPM too in their H23? Im just curious to see if me and Eu4ik are the only ones that I know that shift this high on Si engines.

thanks,
tim

btw, i wasnt sure if this went in the drag racing forum or not so please excuse me if its in the wrong place. besides, no one ever reads that forum

I shift at 6800 also... That's where it feels like it dies... and your rpms don't drop below the powerband when you shift that high either.

I shift when my engine hits "High E sharp" That's about the tone just before the rev limiter kicks in...(I have a musical ear) usually

I usually don't look down at the tach I'm busy looking at the road... besides it's not very accurate at higher rpms anyway..

i shift a little earlier cause mine starts to die earlier than that. I don't have my intake on yet though - which is supposed to help particularly in the high rpms. If it felt strong going up to 6800 I would shift then too.

I shift at about 6800. My tach doesn't seem to be off too much because the rev limiter kicks in way before the needle can hit 7k on my tach.

Wow....I remember shifting right at redline on my H23 for the best times. It went 15.09@92mph with i/h/e/pulleys/ignition. It felt like it was falling off after 6k.

i think shifting the h23 that high will cause problems over time, seems like most h23 that are raced end up with a spun rod or main bearing, most every blown h23 i can think of not boost related is due to spun bearings...which coicidentally seems to happen with the h23 vtec set-up, there was a thread a while ago on this topic, the poor rod ratios in the h23 and higher revs...something to think about...peace...btw you should see the look on peoples faces in my car when they see my tach needle go to 8300 on the stock tach and it redlines at 6500..lol..getting the new vtec EL cluster soon, oh well..later

Yes, you can shift at 6800 - 6900 on the stock tach b/c the stock tach is off by ~300 rpms.

No you can shift at 7k on the tach because the fuel cutoff isnt till 6800rpm.

How much does it stress the engine to be shifting that high (like, at fuel-cut)? I just shift mine at the indicated redline, knowing that the tach is 2-300 rpm off...

I seem to get my best times shifting right at redline. After that it feels like it's REALLY working to move faster.

Prolly cause of where peak power is generated, usually just before redline in Honda motors... after that, power tails off somewhat, but at least when you shift you keep the revs higher. I just don't wanna overcook my engine when I have my "rev the snot outta her" moments...
