H23: importance of heatshield between alternator and header...

After installing a DC SS header I put that heatshield back on between the header and alternator. Now it is causing a rattle around 2700 rpm. I was wondering how important it is. Can i just take it off? Does it really prevent damage? Even more so, is it bad to not use it?

Anyone else have a similiar problem?

Thanks, Jordan

I hope it isn't too important because I removed mine after I installed my header. It doesn't look like it could be that much to me. I can't see how the thin metal "sheild" can really affect how how the alternator gets.

The heat shield is there to do what it says - shield heat. Because the header gets so damn hot, it makes the whole engine bay hot, so the heat shield stops to much heat from coming of the header. It's not gonna cause problems, but the engine bay won't be as cool without it. It's got nothing at all to do with the alternator.

Peace

I think you're thinking or the wrong heat sheild. You can't put on that big clunky one with any aftermarket header that increase your power.

has anyone tried putting heat jackets on the header piping?

i'd rather have a cooler engine bay than nice looking headers

It should be OK, just make sure to keep your wiring as far away as possible, and maybe get soom flex loom for a little extra protection
